I try to build a team that does not need to be managed, just guided. I can't teach self-motivation, a desire for success, or a sense of humor; so, I value those that bring these traits to the workplace. Stephen has these traits and, as a result, I don't need to manage him. He manages himself and lets me know when he needs guidance. What more could you ask of a co-worker, particularly one that is in your reporting chain? Stephen has deep analytical skills, excellent emotional intelligence, and tells the truth even when it hurts. He can interact with C-Level personnel as an equal, and has un-tapped (so far) external sales skills. I have been in presentations with him where he has explained complex financial calculations under pressure, and, as a result, his presence has closed multi-million dollar deals.
