This position allowed me to support the Membership and Monitoring Officer in addressing membership enquiries, processing applications and reviewing components of the World Fair Trade Organization’s Guarantee System. Part of this position involved working on an individual project where I compared different Fair Trade Certification Systems. As well, I was involved with the UNHCR's initiative, Made 51 (involvement in this project will carry onto my current role).

My research focused on comparing the experiences of Syrians who arrived spontaneously in the Netherlands seeking asylum with those who came to Canada through the resettlement process. Through interviews with Syrian refugees in both countries, I studied their journey from Syria, their experience with either the asylum or resettlement procedure and their life once they are granted refugee status. I completed field work including 20 in- depth interviews in the Netherlands and 25 in Canada. The interviews, an hour or more in length, were often conducted through a translator. My research focused on the challenges Syrians face in terms of everyday life and integration and if there are elements of their experiences which might foster radicalization. The aim is to help create asylum procedures that are more cooperative and limit any negative impact on individuals seeking refuge. I am currently working to publish this research, which I presented at the International Metropolis Conference in The Hague in September 2017. My research was under the guidance of Dr. Joris van Wijk. As a research intern, I worked individually and as part of a team with the Head of the Criminology Department to create an excel database of the social and legal sanctions for over one hundred corporations allegedly involved in international crimes. This research involved monitoring and researching news articles, finding and analyzing court cases, NGO reports, corporate social responsibility reports and annual reports, supply chain operations and systems, and stakeholder agreements. This data was then analyzed using 130 variables. I was also involved in developing the codes to identify the themes within these data accurately. Show less
