Responsible for QualityLogic's Smart Energy strategy, marketing, business development and product development direction for the interoperability and testing business. Smart Energy products and services currently include OpenADR Test Harness, development support and training; IEEE 2030.5 Interoperability and Functional test systems, development support and training; active support of the industry in CA Rule 21 Interoperability requirements and other DER related activities. James also directs involvement in the SEPA, IEEE PES and SA, SunSpec Alliance, OpenADR Alliance, GWAC and other industry smart grid standardization activities.James is also actively involved as a Member of the GridWise Architecture Council, Chair Emeritus of GridFWD, SEPA's Test and Certification workgroup, and active in CPUC SIWG activities. In his role with QualityLogic, he is a frequent presenter on Smart Energy Interoperability and testing issues and DER Communications protocols.

From 2001 to October, 2008, James oversaw the company as President and CEO. In 2009 James led the company into the Smart Energy area through the award of an ARRA 5-year cost-share grant. This introduced QualityLogic into the Smart Energy business and the company quickly became the leader in providing test tools and services to the industry, focusing on grid edge applications such as Demand Response and DER integration.
