Doug has a great knowledge of Dimensional Management and I would not hesitate to recommend him to deliver any training course related to Dimensional Management. Paul Louw

My company hired Doug to provide training on the Fundamentals of GD&T. I found him extremely knowledgable, easy to understand and was able to teach a difficult subject material to a diverse group individuals. I feel the investment in the course will be well worth the time and money spent getting the training.

Deliver courses in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) teaching the fundamentals of drawing interpretation to the application and analysis of advanced tolerancing schemes. Courses offered in ASME and ISO standards. GD&T consulting including drawing checking and markup services. Working with client’s engineers to gain an understanding of the product functionality and assembly requirements in-order to develop the GD&T scheme accordingly. Ensuring tolerancing is done in accordance with ASME or ISO standards and that the scheme and tolerance choices are optimal and validated via tolerance analysis. Advised customers in how to transition from a one-off project based to a product-based documentation system where use of off-the-shelf product, part interchangeability, revision control and production scalability is paramount. Evaluated existing CAD, design and checking procedures, identified gaps in design validation processes and obstacles to efficient drawing production, made recommendations and provided the economic justification for change. Projects included the complete tolerancing scheme and analysis for an electric generator, a cryogenic pump and a natural gas storage tank. •Collaborated with clients engineers to determine the characteristics most likely to impact product function and focus analysis efforts. •Defined project objectives, set priorities and timeline, directed activities of subcontractor, assigned work and monitored progress. •Modified the product configuration to minimize tolerance stack-up resulting in significantly reduced drawing time and a simplified manufacturing methodology. •Developed GD&T scheme, determined appropriate tolerance values and marked-up drawings for CAD designers. •Provided design checking ensuring drawings developed in compliance with ASME standards. •Prepared tolerance analysis models, performed calculations, evaluated results, and made recommendations to ensure manufacturability, assembly and functionality. • Senior Mechanical Designer/Checker
      • Jun 2014 - Jun 2018

Contract position providing drawing checking, engineering design process improvements, tolerance analysis, and mentoring in the application of GD&T to hydrogen fuel cell assemblies used for Daimler automotive applications. • Identified issues caused by incomplete/unclear vendor part requirements specifications. Developed layout modeling technique incorporating Model Based Definition/Product and Manufacturing Information (MBD/PMI) annotations in the 3D modelling environment. The technique enables GD&T to be created and verified earlier in design, focusing efforts on key characteristics and allowing manufacturing, tooling design and QC to address issues impacting quality and cost prior to prototyping. This reduces design iterations, shortens vendor negotiations, and provides more accurate estimates. Show less

Implemented engineering documentation standards used in the design of fuel cell products. Checked drawings, reviewed designs, made recommendations and resolved issues. Mentored and trained employees in GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis. Performed tolerance analysis using spreadsheets, as well as Pro/ENGINEER and CETOL 6 Sigma variation analysis software.•Established the checking role with emphasis on validating drawing specifications in the design stage resulting in reduced reliance on checking, fewer change orders, improved quality.•Identified engineering personnel’s inability to apply tolerances to designs. Acquired skill as a technical instructor; developed and delivered three courses related to this core competency enabling engineers to apply newly acquired skills on the job.•Introduced Dimensional Management (DM) strategy incorporating tolerance analysis to identify and eliminate tolerancing problems, as well as enable interdepartmental input for the development and verification of specifications.•Worked with quality inspectors to ensure part evaluations were in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards, reviewed data to determine part acceptance and assisted with the interpretation of CMM reporting. Identified an incorrect measurement method when QC was experiencing a high rate of non-conforming parts. A new procedure was developed and all parts were found to be conforming to the functional requirement.•Investigated Pro/Engineer Tolerance Analysis Extension to test the software’s ability to perform tolerance stacks using all geometric tolerances. Software required incorporation of 3D modeling annotation features to perform the analysis. Made recommendations based on results.•Created data sheet archiving system for integration with Product Lifecycle Management software which resulted in reduced time spent sourcing vendor product data.
