Until his retirement on July 1st, 2015, Alberto was responsible for the cooperative planning and development of learning technology programs and practices for all faculty in this two-year college. The Office of Learning Technologies was part of the College’s Center for Teaching and Learning and supported faculty in the development of online courses, application of emerging technologies to learning practices across the curriculum, and distance learning. Alberto taught Geography and Oceanography online at FCC, and conducted faculty development workshops on emerging technologies, course management systems, and inquiry-based learning. On April 1st, 2013, Alberto's course PC 104, "The Water Planet - Introduction to Oceanography", received the "Best Online Course of the Year 2013" Award from the Maryland Distance Learning Association. He designed and implemented after-school, weekend and summer programs serving urban minority and female youth to provide them with scientific education, computer, technology, study, and communications skills. He developed and conducted innovative Summer Science and Technology Teacher In-service Institutes that included intensive field-based marine science and educational technology training for middle and high school teachers in the Miami-Dade and Monroe school districts.
