I had the privilege of working working with Marianna in a number of projects. Marianna is a very knowledgeable and experienced social scientist who is always seeking new and innovative solutions. She is a fantastic team player and very supportive to colleagues and coworkers. She is intelligent, very focused on the tasks in hand and most importantly she is a doer who implements ideas and make them happen. I highly recommend her as a very valuable asset for any organisation and team that she works for.

EnergyPROSPECTS (PROactive Strategies and Policies for Energy Citizenship Transformation) will work with a critical understanding of energy citizenship that is grounded in state-of-the-art SSH insights. Our 3-year project aims to develop a broad understanding of energy citizenship, which we understand as a policy concept, a sociotechnical imaginary, a knowing-of-governance, i.e. a social construction of desirable/normal civic agency in future energy systems. We identify and examine a range of cross-cutting issues in energy citizenship, which will inform iterative typology development and criteria for case selection.Drawing on existing databases and a search for new cases, we will select 500 initiatives and undertake mapping and typology refinement exercises to demonstrate the depth/breadth of the energy citizenship concept in theory and practice. 40 cases will be selected for in-depth analysis exploring development, evaluation, intermediaries, institutions, governance and ICT in energy systems. Using a multi-actor perspective, we will develop an empowerment toolkit for practitioners and citizens, co-create viable strategies, and develop new business and social innovation models, and new forms of organisation to advance energy citizenship.A critical part of the research involves analysing the external and internal contextual conditions as they support or hinder energy citizenship in its various forms. Based on the analysis we will match suitable models and forms of organisation with different countries, regions and contexts.

Main areas of research and consultation work included: 'Local Assets, Local Decisions and Community Resilience' in rural locations and benefits arising for community-driven development and growth, including implications for local democracy, community participation, inclusive and just governance. Exploring innovative community engagement mechanisms to ensure that citizens are meaningfully informed and represented in energy decisions is my long-lasting interest and aspiration. This work was funded by RESAS (2016-2021). The aims of this 5 Year programme are: 1) to assess how communities have been, or can be, empowered to generate local economic development, shape service provision, directly address poverty, or influence key land use decisions over the long term; 2) to understand how these processes can play a key (rural) development role in enhancing community resilience and wellbeing; 3) the costs and benefits of a community-led approach to addressing systemic challenges and maximising opportunities. My previous research work focused on ‘Low Carbon Rural Economy’ and in particular on the governance and institutions involved in facilitating or hindering the transition to a low carbon economy and society in rural areas in Scotland. This research was part of the Rural and Environment Research Analysis Directorate (RESAS) funded programme ‘Environmental Change (Local Response to Global Change)’ (2011-16).'Governance and Decision-making for Community Empowerment in rural communities':I was also involved at the Scottish Government-funded research stream reviewing conceptual frameworks and methodologies of vibrant rural areas and evaluating interventions to develop strong, resilient and supportive rural communities. This research was undertaken by the Rural Society Research Team at SRUC and members of the Socio-Economics Research Group at the James Hutton Institute.
