Monica is a consummate professional who is dedicated to doing what is in the best interest of her students. Over the past several years, I have had the opportunity to watch her develop and grow a robust environmental science program. Most recently, we have spent the year collaborating on numerous climate change-focused projects. Every conversation seeks to move the conversation forward. She is not afraid to implement meaningful and thoughtful change. Our students and faculty are better because of her presence at our school.

My responsibilities as the Subject Matter Expert in the Areas of Anatomy and Physiology and Biology include authoring and editing science modules for LearnSmart Labs and LearnSmart Achieve software for higher education learning. LearnSmart Labs is revolutionizing the lab experience by providing an adaptive, interactive, personalized lab experience that encourages students to theorize and experiment like scientists do. In the highly realistic LearnSmart Labs environment, students can practice the scientific method, safely develop and test hypotheses, and think critically about their findings before ever setting foot in a physical lab. In my LearnSmart Labs project collaboration, I have the opportunity to assist in the design of these online laboratory simulators for Human Anatomy and Physiology, serving as the author for digital educational content included in each module, as well as a scientific reviewer of the accuracy and quality of those labs. LearnSmart Achieve is a revolutionary new learning system that combines a continually adaptive learning experience with important, rich, dynamic learning resources to help students learn the material, retain more knowledge and get better grades. As a student progresses through LearnSmart Achieve, the program’s continuously adaptive learning path adjusts to deliver just-in-time resources – instructional videos, simulations and more – catered to each student’s needs. This model is designed to accelerate learning and strengthen memory recall. My role as a SME in this project involves the design of online learning resources and evaluation tools to provide such adaptive learning platform for students in the area of Human Anatomy and Physiology. Responsibilities involved advising students, hiring and supporting faculty, and coordinating the community college outreach in the academic area of sciences. I also served as the college Chemical Hygiene Officer, ensuring the college remained in regulatory compliance with its laboratory safety practices and procedures. As a part of that function, I also oversaw the state-wide systematic science supply ordering system for the college. RESEARCH My primary research interest concerns the molecular alterations in the prefrontal cortex involved in schizophrenia pathology. Past studies have been done on postmortem tissue. In particular, I studied the abnormal expression and altered protein interactions of glutamate and GABA receptors in subpopulations of cells in the prefrontal cortex. TEACHING I was Course Director of the Undergraduate Human Anatomy and Physiology (ANPS19-20). This two-semester course enrolls over 350 students from multiple undergraduate majors, covers the structure and function of the human body and includes a 3-lecture/week format with an additional online laboratory component. I was the student contact person and also responsible for the on-line laboratory design for the course. Show less
