Bio
Dan Rogers
Karim is my favourite meat candy. He makes everything better with bacon. His only downside is his self-deprecation, he's definitely at least 100x bacon. Second only to George Michael.
Wes Houghton
Karim is one of the most expressive and passionate designers I have had the pleasure to work with. We have teamed up on several projects together and his combination of relentless perfection, twisted creativity and bullet proof rationale has made each project a huge success. Winning a BIMA with him was a real pleasure and a highlight of our careers. Oh and he's also one of the funniest people on the planet. Fact.

Bacon Specialist
-
Jul 2013 - Jan 2019
I first hunt and kill the bacon. Bacon is then taken back to our cave and placed on the George Fornby grill for 13 minutes at 215 degrees celsius. I then monitor the bacon funnel using BaconAnalytics Pro to ensure that the Maillard reaction takes place. The bacon is then consumed and the user experience of everyone is increased by 50X.On Wednesdays, I primarily discover, design and execute on hypergrowth.Shukran.

May 2010 - Jun 2013
International Mobile Operator (R&D), June 2011 to August 2011 Following on from the success of a handset application, I was approached to design a tablet version of a news magazine for the iPad working alongside a leading creative architect. The concepting began from scratch and various innovative concepts were presented including: a new way of consuming the news using a cinematic content player which takes static content and turns It to a movie-like experience. Several design iterations were made before the perfect design was reached. A comprehensive UX specification was produced as well as animations and complex code-based visualisations. International Mobile Operator (D&UX), August to October 2010: I was the user experience architect in designing the startup wizard for Android Devices. A new signature application was designed to help their customers get to grips with the extended functionality available on these devices. I was involved in concepting innovative ways to teach users about their phone, user testing and writing detailed UX specifications for the work. International Mobile Operator (R&D), October to December 2010 This well known organisation were looking to build an innovative news reader application for new devices running MeeGo OS and Symbian. I worked with an award-winning visual designer to create a simplified, beautiful approach to reading news on the mobile device by designing the application from scratch. Animated concepts were produced to help convey animated transitions and iterate the design. I produced the animated concepts and wireframes for the application which enabled the client to showcase the concept rapidly around the business and test transitions which take far longer to develop. Balfour Beatty Workplace - "Intranet redesign with a difference"
-
London, United Kingdom
-
Lead User Experience Designer
-
Jan 2010 - May 2010
Winner of Employee-Facing Portal Blazer Award in 2010. Balfour Beatty Workplace wanted to turn the corporate intranet on its head and build a fun, next-generation employee-engaged Intranet. BBW wanted it to feel “non-corporate” but provide powerful and innovative features to improve communication and efficiency. I was involved at the lead user experience architect managing the outputs from two experience architects. As BB Workplaces employees work predominantly away from a desktop computer a solution involving mobile and desktop was designed to enable the whole workforce to collaborate. A user group was established with around 20 users who we tested designs and prototypes with throughout the design process. These represented the key user segments in the organisation. Moodboards were developed and the feedback from users provided the direction going forward. A “living and breathing” animation was created which changes during the course of the day. Individuals appear as the sun rises and sets over the company. The User Experience and Design work was carried out across 3 sprints, each of which involved iteratively testing the latest designs with the user group. Show less

• Department of Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) - The DCSF urgently needed a usability toolkit to allow diagnosis of issues in all 152 local authorities across England. Karim rapidly developed a usability tool and guidance pack which was piloted and deployed nationwide in just 2 weeks and is one of the UK’s largest usability self-assessments. The tool enabled senior officers to collect detailed feedback from their children’s social care practitioners, in order to diagnose usability issues. Local authorities find the tool immensely beneficial in focussing on areas with the most severe usability issues. • NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) - The NHSBSA is responsible for delivering effective and efficient business services with 950 million+ transactions/year with a value of around £20 billion. Karim was responsible for gathering requirements at senior stakeholder level (CEO/CFO/COO) in order to produce a rich click-through prototype to help the client realise an executive information system (EIS). During the development phase of the EIS, Karim led the user interface and interaction design and provided designs for a development team. The NHSBSA find the dashboard highly beneficial in gaining a top-level view of any critical issues across the business. • Becta - Karim led the user experience and helped development of the £250k “Generator” portal (www.generatorfeandskills.com). Generator is a self-service tool used nationally by Further Education providers to inform planning and benchmark their ICT capability. Karim used iterative design meetings with the client to facilitate a full User Centred Design process with production of wireframes, style guide and delivering the tool end-to-end in .NET. The benefits for Becta were the successful deployment of a state-of-the-art clean interface with an optimised user experience. The portal was launched with much acclaim at the Next Generation Conference. Show less

User Interface Designer
-
Jul 2007 - May 2008
At this highly successful startup, I headed the User Experience and UI Design for the next generation of Solution Design products. Responsible for all aspects of visual UI design and user experience (interaction design and usability) and delivering designs and assets to the development team. Designed a new high-end innovative interface for rule visualisation as part of the product, for presentation to high-profile global integration companies such as BT Global Systems. It was at Nexagent that I started to use animated prototyping techniques to rapidly visualise and get a feel for complex UIs and transitions. Using this technique I was able to create mock-ups of UIs whose development roadmap was years ahead. In April 2008, Nexagent was acquisitioned by EDS and shortly after by Hewlett Packard, resulting in all projects being frozen. As such, I moved on for fresh challenges. Show less

Sep 2003 - Jun 2007
As the lead user interface designer I led the UI design of over 10 communication/media based products including Audio Conferencing, Unified Communications, IP Centrex and Mass Calling. Highlights include: • Design of a new innovative soft-phone interface (which won Product of the Year 2006) as part of Content Gurus IP Centrex offering. I also designed the IVR’s used in the telephony side of the application and developed the back-end call flows. • Designed a new Mass Calling Campaign tool allowing shows such as Big Brother, X-Factor, and Strictly Come Dancing to rapidly deploy voting application across mobile (SMS), web-voting and tele-voting. The intuitive UI allowed business-orientated users to easily create such applications and deploy them nationwide in a matter of minutes. The RedResponse tool went on to win Product of the Year 2007. • Designed RedView, a new web-based statistical analysis product allowing users to view real-time statistics for Mass Calling applications and other IVR and mass media applications. This allows campaign managers for shows such as Big Brother, The X-Factor and Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Strictly Come Dancing of Here view votes and call metrics. • Designed a Unified Media Centre UI, allowing consumers to access their online media such as voice recordings, conference recordings, voicemail and perform Live Conferencing where participants can be viewed and managed through an online UI. • In 2005, I led the re-design of Redwoods popular RedMatrix Audio-Conferencing solution used by the US Department of State, CitiBank, Merrill Lynch. New features included a new web UI as well as the desktop edition. RedMatrix went on to win the 2005 Product of the Year. Show less
