Bio
John C. Pollock
Kristen is one of The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) communication studies department's shining stars. While an undergraduate, her highly professional papers won several national awards, including "best student paper in the nation" from the national honor society of the National Communication Association. What makes Kristen the "great leader" among all students I have taught in my 21 years as a professor at TCNJ, however, is that no one has given back more to the college that nurtured her. Two examples:First, Kristen founded the interdisciplinary Public Health Communication Club, one of the most vibrant student clubs both in our department and throughout the entire college, hosting talks in fall, 2012, from Congressman Dr. Rush Holt on national health care reform, and in spring, 2013, from Dr. Arvind Singhal, internationally renown expert on the use of Entertainment-Education to combat gender violence/disparities and fight AIDS worldwide. Second, Kristen initiated our twice-yearly department newsletter, "The Roar" (the way our college mascot, a lion, "communicates"). "The Roar" has become a major vehicle for communicating among students, faculty, alumni, and prospective students, a fascinating record of the vibrant student activities, challenging internships, rewarding jobs, and excellent graduate and professional schools with which our students have become associated. Kristen improves the lives of all those she touches. If I had a daughter, I would want her to be just like Kristen. I can think of no higher recommendation.
