Sylvain is one of the most passionate, smart and highly skilled software engineers I have ever come across. He was recommended to me 4 years ago and not having a role I went into the meeting more out of curiosity but came out with that awesome feeling of... we have to have him! After figuring out a way to hire him he became the key senior engineer working with the team lead in a small equally enthusiastic and skilled team working on our cutting edge geospatial technology. He has that rare ability to get his point of view across in a calm measured way while still maintaining the highest standards, pride in his work and producing some of the best code I have ever seen. He can converse equally well with juniors through to Directors and is perfectly at home talking to the business. It is a testament to him that I've never heard a bad word said about him in all those years and in fact it's quite the opposite, they go out of their way to praise him. I think the easiest way to show how highly I regard Sylvain is that after he moved back to Canada we kept in touch and then rehired him when a position became available even though he was our first remote worker at that time. We both thought it would only last a few months but the fact it lasted nearly three years shows the high esteem we hold him in and the level Sylvain operates at. It's an honour to call Sylvain a friend as well as an amazing engineer and I'm sure we'll cross paths again.

When I joined Nearmap, Sylvain was a contractor for my new team of javascript developers. He used to work for the company in Sydney, then when he moved to Canada, they kept him on. Working with a developer in a different timezone comes with a set of communication difficulties, but Sylvain makes it easy. To see this in action, look at one of his reviews on a pull request. This takes a back and forth between developers before being resolved. However, Sylvain, knowing the issue with timezones, takes his time to fully understand the code, and makes thoughtful, thorough, kind yet constructive criticism, complete with potential actions to resolve it. Truly the best PR comments I’ve ever seen in all my years as a software engineer. That thoroughness is reflected in his approach to all projects he’s worked on at his time with Nearmap. He works independently, solves problems, and the resulting code works well, is thoroughly tested and beautiful to read. On top of that, he is always friendly and good humoured. Sylvain is a pleasure to work with. I’d hire him again in a heartbeat.
