Vecima makes hardware and this position entailed building and maintaining the software that runs on that hardware. Language-wise, programming was done predominantly in C, with occasional bits of shell scripting, python, and web-based languages. Designing and implementing new features, debugging and fixing bugs in legacy (or other people's) code, and integrating third party libraries into projects were all fairly common tasks. This position entailed developing and improving features for IBM's Tivoli Provisioning Manager as well as occasionally fixing bugs, doing UI work, and reviewing documentation. Development primarily used Java, a proprietary scripting language used to write workflows, Dojo, and xml-based documents. Technically a scholarship, the job was awarded to me based on academic achievement. Job included developing a visualization to show data obtained from a researcher's project. Visualization was created using Objective-C and OpenGL and included a real-time layout algorithm. I was also involved in conceptualizing some tabletop and touch screen concepts, as well as helping preparing a research grant proposal during this period.
