I was excited by Cyberhawk from the moment I started working with them in 2014 (while at Arum), and from that point on I first worked to build the iHawk web application and then build a development team to keep up with the ever-growing functionality and customer base. The Cyberhawk team were already world-class drone pilots and inspection engineers, but they needed an equally awesome web application to deliver a vast amount of data to their energy customers who used this data daily to make critical decisions. I describe Cyberhawk as an engineering company, we just happen to use drones to capture the engineering data and we use software to deliver the engineering insights. I'm immensely proud to be part of the amazing team at Cyberhawk doing work across the globe, ensuring that we deliver for our customers with the right software, and the right data, in the right way at the right time. Arum offered me an amazing opportunity to return and start their Software Development department focusing on Rich Internet Applications (RIA) and User-Centered Design. I originally left Arum to do more coding and this new opportunity meant I got to return to a great company to work on new and exciting technologies. During this time we created a successful software consultancy team, helped Adobe Consulting deliver several major products, created multiple web applications for customers and built our own products. One of our customers was Cyberhawk and over time they became a more and more time-consuming customer to the point where I was seconded to them as CIO. In the end, Cyberhawk loved what our team was doing so much that they bought the software department out of Arum and made us one of their own. My secondment ended as a permanent employee at Cyberhawk. Show less

Arum Consultant in Adobe Systems. Worked on multiple projects implementing Rich Internet Applications in Flex / Actionscript for Adobe Consulting's clients as well as internal projects for Adobe. Projects included NATO's Mission Support System, PAYE Anytime for the Irish Revenue and the Hendrix call centre application for Adobe. I came for the coding and stayed for the mortgage. Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBoS) gave me first-hand experience of working for a large institution as an insider, not an external consultant. We did great work implementing the Basel II Accord (don't Google it) but unfortunately it didn't come quickly enough to avoid the financial crash. I got a ring-side seat to watch how the company culture allowed salesmen to manipulate the risk rating reports to sell risky loans to massive shopping malls and tankers. While I was there I did get exposure to a new trend starting up in the form of Rich Internet Applications (RIA), delivering web interactions that were entirely focused around the user experience and it blew my mind. I knew this was the future of the internet and to my surprise my previous company, Arum, turned out to be my way forward. They came to me and asked if I would help them start up a consultancy division focused on RIAs and I jumped at the chance. Show less

Out of university I was considering jobs in electronics when a friend recommended me for a role in a software consultancy. It wasn't the role I was intending to take, but it sounded interesting so I gave it a go and never looked back. It was the perfect start for me, it had variety, responsibility, ownership and experience that would have taken years to gather in a normal developer role. I got to work on large-scale implementations, learned from some amazing people and got involved in some projects that I can't discuss here. But ultimately I ended up working on a project that had more process management than coding and I wanted to do more .NET in a big company so I answered a call and took a role working for a bank. If you live in Edinburgh you have to work for a bank at some point, otherwise no one would have a mortgage. Ultimately, I count starting my career at Arum as one of the best steps I've taken along the way. Show less
