Lydia Howie, MS, GPC

As a grant writer consultant for Howie Marketing and Consulting, Susan handled all aspects of grants management including grants research, writing, follow-up reporting, and client and funder contact. She has written proposals and reports on a wide variety of topics including youth development, health and human services, learning disabled, mental illness, diseases, the environment, the arts, and more. She is a gifted grant writer who is skilled at incorporating the right balance of facts and passion. She is also a pleasure to work with. She takes on all assignments willingly and is very conscientious. Susan will be an excellent employee for any organization lucky enough to hire her!

Susan researched potential funding sources for us under a very tight deadline and did a thorough and well organized job. She listened well and was very responsive. She was a pleasure to work with and is very dedicated to helping non-profits find the funding they need to support their work.

Since 2013, I have helped nonprofit organizations in New York City and Westchester County find sources of corporate and foundation funding to support their important programs and services. My experience with different funding databases and strong research skills help to create new funding prospect opportunities for organizations that will increase their capacity. Representative engagements: - Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson: Using Wealth Engine and other databases, I created detailed profiles of 50 high-touch donors with the potential to give at least $50K gifts, for the organization’s development staff to craft a cultivation strategy. - Project Kesher: I edited program reports for funders, which were written by non-native English speakers. I also drafted new text for the reports, which was incorporated into them. - NMG Evaluation: For an evaluation project of a grant for leadership development in a local school district, I interviewed key informants about their experiences in leadership development programs. I drafted sections of the analytic evaluation report based on interviews that identified effective practices and measured outcomes. Accomplishments include: - Reviewed and analyzed profiles and 990s’ of approximately 125 foundations, finding 31 potential funding sources for a national nonprofit focused on work-family issues. The Pro Bono Partnership is a nationally recognized provider of free business and transactional legal services to nonprofits. PBP recruits and supports volunteer attorneys with a range of specializations to help nonprofits in the tristate area achieve their goals, avoid risk, and better serve their constituencies. I provided fundraising support to the Director of Development, primarily by collaboratively managing a portfolio of foundation, corporate, and government grants. I worked with the Director of Development on fundraising initiatives, including grant proposals and reports, the annual appeal, and special events, and oversaw a portfolio of renewals and prospects in collaboration with the Director. I also tracked and met upcoming grant deadlines, reports, and requirements. I am very familiar with online grant submission portals including Versaic, Cybergrants, New York State Grants Gateway and Smart Simple , and the New Jersey State grants portal - (www.sage.nj.gov). Accomplishments include: - I submitted 60+ grant proposals and 20+ grant reports to funders during my tenure at the Partnership (an average of 5 per month). - Raised grant awards ranging from $2,500 to $50,000. I was hired as one of the organization’s first development staff, to help build the infrastructure to support a high-quality development effort and to organize and implement an annual gift campaign to expand revenue. I coordinated the annual campaign, and helped design and produce fundraising materials. I researched potential individual and institutional funders and provided statistical reports on development activities. I tracked, reported, and acknowledged donations. I also edited and drafted grant proposals for foundation requests for travel grants for untenured/independent scholars. I tracked and coordinated foundation requests, and monitored grants activity. Accomplishments include: - Created a brand new donor stewardship program for Lead Gift donors ($1000 +), which included special acknowledgment and events. At least a half a dozen donors were acknowledged in the new program. Show less

I assisted the Large Grants program of the UUCSR with their grantmaking program. As a “start-up” grantmaking project, the Large Grants program gave away six, one-time grants of $100K each year to Long-Island based organizations that were chosen by the members of the congregation. I helped manage the RFP process for funding areas chosen by the Congregation, researched potential grantees, drafted and distributed RFPs, and wrote proposal summaries. I also prepared summary reports of mid-year and year-end impact reports from the previous year’s grantees for the Large Grants Advisory Committee and Congregation. Accomplishments include: - Prepared summary reports of 10-12 mid-year and year-end impact reports from previous year’s grantees. - In one week, wrote summaries for 6-7 grant proposals in both fall and spring for a summary report distributed to Large Grants Committee and congregation.
