Caring in Hospitals Experience

This course considers the type of care offered in hospitals, using Leeds General Hospital as a case study. The course looks at the people who have roles within the hospital, how they interact with each other and patients and what they consider to be 'care'. The different approaches and contributions to care by doctors and nurses are explored and patients give their perspective on the care they receive.

The BSMS Virtual Work Experience is a free online course that aims to highlight key points and scenarios you may encounter on work experience in a clinical setting. The course runs through six modules, each pertaining to a different specialty, and uses patient case studies to help illustrate important learning points.The course ends with a reflective piece which is reviewed by the medical team.

It is a free interactive video platform providing insights into the role of a GP and the wider primary care team.Here I observed the receptionist, several General Practitioners and an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, both in the waiting room and in individual consultation rooms.

I was able to sit in a series of three taster lessons, which were a reflection of three separate modules in the MBBS programme. One of these was the Clinical and Professional Practice (CPP), to which we delved into ethical requirements of Doctors. I found this very insightful.

I undertook a week work experience placement in the summer months of 2018, where I aided the Health Records Department with administration work, where I sorted out files, gathered vital documents from the stock room and organised outpatient forms for the current week.I got to know the importance of every department within a hospital.

Attended The Subject Matters Science Conference

I attended a series of Cambridge based events on the importance of my A level choices, then sat through a science based lecture on Epigenetics.Epigentics was described as 'stuff on top of DNA' but later explained how epigentic marks are influenced by our environment. The lecturer explained the potential links with aging in women, in terms of X-chromosomes inactivation, and the possibility of epigenetics being passed down in generations.
