I worked in direct collaboration with Ana, while she was Clinical Embryologist Liaison manager in Progyny (formerly Auxogyn) during European rollout of flagship product Eeva, a test used to assess early embryo viability. This was a consistently challenging role with many milestones achieved which led up to the Global distribution partnership with Merck KGaA Fertility Technologies, a team dedicated to improving clinical outcomes in IVF labs. Ana is focussed in building excellent relationships with customers, who regularly commended Ana for her professional and friendly approach. Ana is a very knowledgeable embryologist and always took time to explain processes and procedures performed in IVF to ensure that all aspects are clear and understood. I personally learned so much from Ana about IVF while working together throughout Europe through commercial launches in parallel to launch of a multicentre clinical trial of the first automated timelapse imaging system proven to improve clinical outcomes. As with all new product rollouts, there are many enhancements that can be made and Ana was excellent in communicating back to our team based in the US, which involved many late night calls to ensure that the customer's experience is forefront. Ana is very honest, has great pride in her work and can depend on her to complete tasks that she has committed herself to. It was a great pleasure to work with Ana and I relish the opportunity to work with her again in the future.

During my stay, I worked in the project entitled “Cryopreservation of Human Ovarian tissue”. I have learnt the clinical technique of cryopreservation of the ovarian tissue and subsequently worked in the optimization of the cryopreservation protocol. This optimization consisted on the test of several parameters (cryoprotectant agent, time of exposure), PH and concentration of protein in the freezing medium, size of the ovarian tissue fragments). These tests were relevant as cryopreservation of human ovarian tissue, performed mainly for fertility preservation in cancer patients, is still not highly efficient. Show less

My work involved time course oxygen measurements in oocytes and zygotes using the Embryoscope (an automated unit capable of continuously monitoring the morphological development and the oxygen consumption of individual oocytes and embryos). I used epifluorescence and confocal microscopy techniques to characterize the metabolic activity of oocytes/zygotes in the post-fertilization period and to determine the embryonic nuclear. In addition, I assessed levels of reactive oxygen species in oocytes/zygotes by photometric reflectance microscopy and correlated these results with embryonic oxygen consumption. Key contributions: • Lopes A.S., Lane M. and Thompson J.G. (2010) Oxygen consumption and ROS production are increased at the time of fertilization and cell cleavage in bovine zygotes. Human Reproduction, 25(11):2762-2773. • Lopes A.S., Dalvit G.C., Lane M. and Thompson J.G. (2009) The increased oxygen consumption at the time of sperm penetration is associated with a peak of ROS production. Reproduction, Fertility and Development 21:159. • Lopes A.S., Dalvit G.C., Lane M. and Thompson J.G. (2008) Peaks of respiration and ROS production coincide with the time of fertilization and cell cleavage in bovine oocytes. Human Reproduction 23(1): 152. Show less
