Master thesis project: "Prandtl tip loss factor assessed"Grade: 8.5Main objective: giving aerodynamics-based insight in the losses at the tip of wind turbine blades, originating from multiple three-dimensional effects, in order to improve the in literature given empirical tip loss factors that are used in the blade element momentum theory. This is done by 1) validating the in-house free-wake vortex method with experimental data, 2) by creating a more fundamental tip loss factor from this method and 3) by extending/improving work done in translating computational fluid dynamic variables to engineering variables to form a basis for an even more refined tip loss factor.
