Linguistics Tutor

I tutored first year Linguistics courses at the University of Cape Town. The core modules included syntax and morphology, phonetics and phonology, and the psychology of language. I was responsible for teaching one tutorial class of 20 students per week, as well as invigilating tests and exams when necessary, and facilitating private consultations to provide extra support to struggling students. The Humanities Faculty Mentorship Programme assists first year students who have been accepted into the Extended Degree Programme at UCT. As a mentor, I conducted weekly meetings with four first-year students to ease their transition into university life and to guide them through their first semester. This required good knowledge of the UCT administrative system, as well as the various resources available to students, such as the libraries, computer labs, work spaces and writing centres. As senior copyeditor, I formed part of the senior editorial team at Varsity Newspaper. The senior editorial team was responsible for running meetings, holding interviews, dealing with conflict, and managing the rest of the collective. I was specifically tasked with editing the newspaper, from initial drafts to the final print version. I also managed a team of sub editors to assist with the editing process.
