Encompass a staggering 1.7 million km², or 66% of sub-Saharan Africa’s entire protected area estate, game reserves and other secondary protected areas are experiencing unprecedented levels of human pressure and other anthropogenic threats. Historically, these lesser known protected areas - designated for sustainable utilization - have been supported predominantly by trophy hunting and/or forestry. In recent years, the steep decline of the hunting industry has left many of these wild areas neglected, unmanaged and economically fallow. Whilst the debate around hunting rages, the accelerating loss of enormous tracts of invaluable African wilderness is largely being overlooked and ignored with dire consequences for ecosystem function, rural livelihoods and biodiversity survival. Conserve identifies, secures and supports healthy, functioning ecosystems as a foundational requirement for the longevity of Africa’s wilderness areas to the benefit of rural communities and wildlife alike.

Recruited to head up the dynamic Sisheke Conservation Project: a long-term public-private partnership to sustainably develop a 1.5 million hectare community conservancy on the Upper Zambezi in southwest Zambia. Working in conjunction with the Peace Parks Foundation and Barotse Royal Establishment, Javelin Capital functions as the asset manager of this large tract of threatened wilderness within the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA). This pioneering conservation and community development approach strives to unlock the incredible commercial conservation and ecotourism potential of the neglected Sisheke Chiefdom. By cultivating strategic partnerships with Nedbank Capital, the REDD+ carbon credit potential of the region is being investigated as a potential source of long-term revenue for the ongoing rehabilitation and development of this groundbreaking conservation initiative. Upon launch of the special purpose subsidiary Javelin Zambia Ltd, I transitioned into a new role as the CEO of JavZam.
