Joan Maso Pau
I have supervised the job of Paula during more than five years in the Autonomous University of Barcelona and CREAF (2008-2012). She took part of outstanding international and national projects all related with geospatial analysis and natural science. She won a highly competitive award to conduct research at City University, with a very impressive inter-disciplinary project to compare renewable energy policies in China and in Europe. She did some excellent work while she was in Hong Kong, work that I could fairly closely supervise, along with her Hong Kong supervisor counterpart, including a public presentation in Beijing (ISRSE35). Paula is an expert in geospatial analysis, using Earth Observation data, OGC web services (WMS, WMTS, WMS-C), metadata, standards (ISO and OGC) and Geographic Information Systems in general. Let me emphasise that she has also well command in law, and policy research, as she demonstrated in her state of the art review about China’s renewable energy policies. She has an excellent analytical power and reasoning, motivation, perseverance, writing and argumentation skills demonstrated by several scientific publications, some of which we have also participated in. Paula is quite able to solve problems by herself and at the same time, she has excellent capacity for working in group, and nice attitude to colleagues. Paula is a hard worker, always willing to take the time to discuss my concerns and respond to questions. I want to remark that even after she decided to leave CREAF we have continued collaborating in some publications and projects demonstrating her compromise with our research group far beyond contractual obligations.

- Which technical developments will Switzerland need to substiute the nuclear by domestic solar and wind? - It is possible to dispatch all Swiss demand combining imports of wind from the North Sea and concentrating solar power form Morocco? - Which role would Swiss hydropower play in these future scenarios? - Which opinions share the stakeholders in projects of renewable energy production? In my research I answer the previous questions. My project, funded by the Swiss Government, aims to analyse the feasibility of the Swiss Energy Strategy 2050, which proposes to replace nuclear power with renewables by 2050.
