John Betz has been a real pleasure to work with on the oceanographic research vessels of the U.S. Antarctic Program. I have been John’s direct supervisor aboard during his time as Senior Marine Laboratory Technician. He is responsible for the myriad details of directly supporting the scientists laboratory needs aboard the ship. A laboratory at sea encompasses many spaces aboard and he needs to be attentive to all aspects including instrumentation, chemicals, hazardous waste, sample shipment and interfacing with up to 26+ grantees who have diverse requirements. Thus this also requires excellent communication skills. On top of this, as an EMT he attends to medical issues when they arise and must be able to work with physicians remotely via current communications technology. He is also eager and willing to help out anywhere aboard where help is needed and can always be counted on to perform at the highest level. John does all the above in a very calm manner, thoughtful and deliberate, with forward thinking, well-conceived initiative, and so personable that people really enjoy working with him. He is a great asset to the science community and crew.
