Jake is a gem of a being and teammate who shows compassion for the product and the people whom he works with. He is an exceptional communicator, critical thinker, and leader who can navigate complexities and rapid change in a challenging problem space. My interactions with Jake were always extremely positive when I worked with him in the same squad, and as I watched him maintain a strong team culture while scaling his team during a hyper-growth phase. I've always admired his thoughtfulness and thoroughness when we collaborated on projects; and his people-first approach in building a culture that values ongoing growth and diverse perspectives. Jake is a value-add to any organization and I hope our paths cross again in the future.

Jake is an outstanding engineer, a great collaborator, and a natural leader who nurtures strong relationships with co-workers and fosters a culture of trust and transparency. Over the almost 3 years we worked side by side, Jake has consistently delivered solutions across a wide breadth of problem areas. For example, I've seen him implement and deploy code to solve technical challenges, and well as develop and document disaster recovery and business continuity procedures. While leading the department through a recent "hyper-growth" phase, Jake developed and honed our interview and on-boarding processes. As a leader, Jake is patient, thoughtful, collaborative, and always open to feedback and suggestions. He takes the time and effort to make himself available, and is easy to talk to and is a great listener. Overall, he leads by example and sets a high bar with his strong work ethic and dedication to excellence. Jake has been a pleasure to work with, and I wouldn't hesitate to work with him again. I can say with confidence that he'll be a huge contributor to any company he joins!

I lead the Lemurs team, which is responsible for the main user-facing web experience. This encompasses both telehealth functionality on web as well as the ecommerce/marketing frontend (built as a headless site on top of Contentful/Shopify). When I joined I was tasked with leading a team of completely new hires to take over the frontend web project from the agency that had been contracted to build it. As the leader of the team I had to navigate both getting all of my team members onboarded and contributing quickly as well as identifying the issues from the project that we inherited so that we could improve the overall application quality and structure. In the first 2 months I led the team to: - Improve the site experience score on marketing pages from 30 to 70 (limited due to script loading) - Drop development page load speeds from 10+ seconds per page down to 1 - 3 seconds (depending on the page) - Establish CI/CD and SDLC processes where none had existed previously. We created a lifecycle of shipping code every day after being thoroughly tested - Drop production build time to 15 minutes from the original 40 minutes (limited due to static generation of pages) - Drop test environment build time to 3 minutes from the original 40 minutes - Establish software architecture patterns within the codebase - Add account management features and fixed numerous bugs left over from the initial handoff After that our team was responsible for the next major feature within the company - "My Fuzzy". My Fuzzy is the core platform for how we recommend long term health benefits to our customers. I was responsible for coordinating the engineering effort across 3 separate teams (web, mobile, and new quizzes) and led my team to successfully plan and deliver the feature within 2 months. I led the engineering organization as we scaled up from 6 to 25 engineers. We were able to accomplish this during a 6 month period in 2021 all while continuing to build the product and work on a major replatforming effort. As a technical leader within the organization, I drove the discussion around a migration to a service oriented architecture, leveraging the experience and opinions of all engineering leadership within the organization. At this time we also involved product and design as we established the team topology and how we would organize our development efforts.I directly managed 4 engineering managers. I helped guide them in making technical decisions, managing process for their teams, and participating in the hiring process. I also actively worked to create a culture of ownership, growth, and ego-free discussion within the entire engineering organization, as well as heavily emphasizing collaboration with product and design while building out the platform.Tech: Ruby/Rails, React, Typescript, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, ElasticSearch, Heroku Show less

I lead the data/insights team at ProducePay, working on products to help growers and distributors better understand the produce market and leverage their data when making decisions. In this role, I mentored team members with technical guidance and career growth. We built the platform from the ground up, scaling from 0 to 15k weekly active users and establishing a consistent pipeline of converting free users to high value customers for our financing product. In order to facilitate this growth we instituted modern software best practices like comprehensive code reviews and CI/CD. Show less

ProducePay is building tools for produce professionals, from financing to data/insights. As primarily a member on the data/insights team, I have worked with large datasets from the USDA, weather APIs, and other sources to build tools that will help our users better understand what is happening and what will happen in the produce industry regarding supply, demand, and pricing. This involves importing and managing over 50 million USDA records going back to 1998, working closely with our data scientist to provide the necessary information, and building graphs, tables, and maps to help display large quantities of data in a concise format.ProducePay works in tightly integrated product teams, and I have worked closely with my product manager to help develop experiments to test our assumptions prior to entering execution mode and building a full product. This ultimately saves time and money as we are able to discover what products will actually provide value to our customers before we build them. Show less

I was brought in for a contract position with the Sherpas team to provide frontend expertise while building out a customized CRM system. I worked closely with backend engineers to add features like file upload and preview, role based authorization, and conditional display of content based on roles. We worked with Typescript, and used a library called react-admin which required heavy customization and building our own integrations. Warscribe is campaign software for tabletop miniatures wargames. It consists of a frontend application built with React/Redux and THREE.js that displays a 3D campaign map. Players can move armies around the map and upon encountering another player they play a tabletop game to resolve the battle. Essentially it is the world-map portion of a total war game. Players can build armies, buildings, and take actions on the map to affect the games that they play. Games are given context based on the location of the map in order to create a more engaging experience. The backend API server is written in Node.js using the koa framework and sequelize to handle model logic. Show less

As a Frontend Engineer for Metamason, I was responsible for creating the Windows application used for taking 3D scans of patients. At a high level, this involved creating a React/Redux/Rxjs single page application in order to manage patient information, user workflows, and communicate with the backend application to store data. This SPA was then run using electron to create a Windows application that could be launched from the desktop. It was necessary to create a Windows application because we needed to interface with a 3D scanner, and the node-ffi library allowed us to do that. I was responsible for creating the C++ library, built as a dll with C-style exports, that was used to make calls to ReconstructMe, the software we were using for scanning. All library releases were versioned in order to provide a reasonable way to include code within the main frontend application. I also contributed to creating a Ruby on Rails backend application that could handle multi-tenancy for different businesses, multiple roles for different users, and could dispatches messages to a RabbitMQ messaging queue. The messaging queue triggered a pipeline on a Windows server that did 3D manipulation of meshes. One technique used for this manipulation was through the popular THREE.js javascript library, which was used on both the Windows server as well as within the frontend app to display scans after they had been taken. I'm proud to say that all code was shipped after going through a rigorous QA process, and that both the frontend and backend applications had excellent automated test coverage. Part of working on an application is working on deployments as well, and I gained devops experience deploying code and creating automated tools to aid in testing and maintaining our applications. Corvae is a company working to create wireless ECG monitors that will constantly record patient data. When an arrhythmia is detected, alerts will be sent out to the patient, loved ones, and doctors. As head of software engineering, I worked to develop an API platform using Ruby on Rails that can be consumed by the frontend web app written in Ember.js as well as the mobile Android app. Part of this was also deploying the Rails app to AWS elastic beanstalk and the Ember component to S3. As a cofounder, I also participated in business planning and strategy, creating a pitch deck to communicate our idea clearly. Show less

I tutored students in basic engineering subjects - Calculus, Physics, Statics, Dynamics, etc... Because the goal is to teach, not solve problems for the students, I have to work on guiding the student to the answer, rather than telling them outright. It was an incredibly rewarding experience, and I learned that I will always have a passion for teaching and helping others. I worked on a new part of the community application. With such a wide network of IT professionals, Spiceworks offers marketers the chance to interact with the community to promote their products. I worked on creating a Backbone/Marionette.js dashboard that would aggregate all of the information that marketers in the community would care about. While at Spiceworks, I also participated in the yearly internal hackathon, placing second in our category. Our product was an internal asset delivery tool used to coordinate between account managers and the community manager team. Show less
