Lyle is an exceptional leader who combines smart analytical thinking, deep understanding of communications and policy strategy, and strong empathy and interpersonal skills. During his time at Funders, he completely overhauled our research, communications, and policy work, expanding our footprint from a single annual tracking report into an entire department producing a suite of reports and infographics, regular communications across multiple channels, and systems for mobilizing funders around policies and regulations affecting LGBTQ communities. Lyle is equally skilled at building longstanding and authentic partnerships, and has been instrumental in strengthening the important work of CHANGE Philanthropy, a coalition of philanthropic networks advancing racial equity, gender justice, and other social justice issues in philanthropy. Lyle also has an exceptional capacity to grow and adapt, which stems from his openness to learning and a deep sense of empathy. His openness and passion are complemented by a wonderful sense of joy that he brings to his work every day. He seems to have the ability to have an engaging conversation with virtually anyone, from funders and individual donors to grassroots leaders and politicos. Lyle is one of the most hard-working and talented people I have ever worked with, and I hope I'll have the honor of getting to work with him again.

As a Trustee for Stonewall Community Foundation, I had the pleasure of working with Lyle Mathew Kan in his role as Foundation and Events Manager over the past two years. It was remarkable to watch Lyle – in record time – master his role with regard to coordinating Special Events and directing Strategic Communications activities for the Foundation. Lyle soon was able to enlarge the scope of his job considerably in the areas of development and fundraising -- which jointly met the Foundation’s needs at the time, and his need to be constantly learning. He is very interested and adept at fundraising which is essential for any person working in non-profit in this economy. It is important to note that during Lyle’s tenure, there were several leadership transitions and periods of uncertainty which were often difficult for staff to navigate. Lyle remained cheerful and flexible throughout this time, showing leadership skills, and rising to meet any new challenges that emerged. We had a very beneficial collaboration with the Stonewall Swim because I think we both really liked the unique concept. Lyle and I worked closely to implement a more sophisticated sponsorship tool for the swimmers and kaykers to use to solicit online donations. The tool is quite robust, and has a number of metric elements which Lyle very enthusiastically used to report back to the board, always providing thoughtful analyses of aggregate event data. As a result of this work, the event continues to consistently outperform previous years. Lyle was also able to build media buzz and attention around the event, often in clever, innovative, and perhaps most importantly... inexpensive ways. He is quite social-media savvy, and added great value in this area for the foundation. He is a natural multi-tasker, infinitely optimistic, and is a highly entrepreneurial and creative person. I recommend him without hesitation.

CHANGE Philanthropy is a coalition of philanthropic networks working together to strengthen bridges across funders and communities. We are transforming philanthropy from within by building knowledge, fostering diversity, and creating connections. As CHANGE Philanthropy’s interim chief executive, I work closely with our Steering Committee, Executive Circle, and a talented team of staff leaders to strategically evolve the organization and maintain day-to-day programming and operations during the executive transition period. I am responsible for monitoring and managing the organization’s $2.4 million annual budget. As the chief fundraiser I have been responsible for securing new foundation funding, doubling a renewal, and switching a renewal from program support to general operating support. Show less

As Senior Fellow, I led the Diversity Among Philanthropic Professionals (DAPP) Survey work. I strengthened and expanded the survey instrument, managed foundation recruitment (increasing the number of participating foundations by nearly 250 percent), conducted the analysis, wrote the report, and presented the findings. To prepare for the 2020 DAPP, I also developed and launched series of infographics to highlight community specific findings from the 2018 DAPP survey.I also designed and provided research and communications focused technical assistance for CHANGE Philanthropy partner organizations. Moreover, I served as a thought partner to the National Director and partner organizations in addition to serving as a coalition representative on several sector wide efforts to address diversity, equity, and inclusion and improve reporting on grantmaking to communities of color. Funders for LGBTQ Issues works to increase the scale and impact of philanthropic resources aimed at enhancing the well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities, promoting equity, and advancing racial, economic and gender justice. As Vice President of Research and Communications, I oversee the organization’s research into trends, gaps and opportunities for LGBTQ funding. I am responsible for developing and implementing the organization's communications strategy and leading efforts to educate the wider philanthropic field about how LGBTQ communities are affected by a range of grantmaking priorities. Funders for LGBTQ issues has a long history of reporting on LGBTQ grantmaking by both U.S. foundations and international institutions. We produce an annual tracking report and other special reports to monitor the charter of LGBTQ funding in order to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities. Our reports on domestic and global LGBTQ funding are considered the field’s most reliable and useful source of data on resource flows to LGBTQ communities. Many of our reports have been cited by academic journals, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, government agencies, newspapers, blogs, and other media. Show less

Stonewall Community Foundation is the public charity for New York City's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community. Since 1990, the Foundation has invested more than $15 million in over 450 organizations via our donor advised funds and annual grant making. The Foundation inspires social change through strategic initiatives designed to engage the community, empower our leaders and invest in grassroots LGBTQ organizations across the five boroughs. At the Foundation I was instrumental in all development efforts, strategic communications and the management of our young giving circle (Stonewall Quarter Share). In my tenure we instituted a formal communications schedule resulting in an average email open rate of 15% above industry average and a click through rate above 60% above industry average. In managing our signature events I procured corporate sponsorships from Armani Exchange, Coors Light, Diageo, Morgan Stanley and more. With the Stonewall Swim I managed to produce a nearly 16% increase in revenue despite the loss of our biggest fundraiser. With REVEL, I secured more corporate sponsorship cash then the event had even seen. Show less

The Foreign Policy Association is a non-profit dedicated to encouraging Americans to get involved and participate in foreign policy decision making. At FPA, I oversaw the expansion of the "FPA U" pilot project into a fully realized program operating in both New York and Washington, D.C. I successfully developed an outreach strategy that not only identified key marketing populations and potential partners, but established measurable objectives, reasonable timing and realistic tactics. Following this plan we were able to sell out several career development seminars with up to 93% of participants coming from outside the FPA membership pool. I was personally responsible for the creation and standardization of all FPA U marketing collateral. This required crafting crafting a core copy, creating HTML emails, re-designing the logo, fashioning fliers and brochures, and compiling press releases and media kits. I was often able to achieve an email open rate 41.5%-77.5% higher than the industry average with a click through rate 38%-102% higher than the industry average. Another aspect of my position required I cultivate partnerships with organizations including the United Nations Association of the United States of America, the American Foreign Service Association, Young Professionals in Foreign Policy, Devex and more. I also was responsible for the recruitment and management of FPA U supporting staff. Show less
