I served on the Salish Sea Expeditions Board of Directors with Matt when he was asked to step in as Interim Executive Director. This occurred at an important point in the organization’s history, with the departure of a successful, long-term Executive Director. Matt helped ensure continuity during a period of change on multiple levels. He: · Maintained staff morale and effectiveness while mounting the search for the new ED · Shepherded an annual budgeting process when federal and state grants unexpectedly were cut, which reduced the organization’s revenues by about 1/3 · Supported a year-end transition in Board composition and leadership Budgeting was especially challenging with such a dramatic drop in funding that occurred shortly after he started. I appreciated Matt’s constructive, frank and transparent style to advocate for an aspirational yet contingent budget during this time of uncertainty. This approach allowed the organization to maintain core staffing and marketing efforts, and buy time for near-term outreach and fundraising to bridge the gap. I also valued Matt’s highly collaborative manner of involving board and staff in our national search for a new ED. He helped us recruit and successfully onboard an excellent leader who is continuing to this day to help Salish increase its reach and impact.

When I was CEO at IslandWood, I brought Matt onto our senior leadership team at an important inflection point for the organization. He has a highly analytical, collaborative style, and strong interpersonal and public communication skills. Matt helped tackle two important challenges: 1) Matt reorganized, refocused and expanded our Philanthropy team. With increased emphasis on major gifts, the team achieved its annual goals in each of Matt’s two years leading this department. He also hired a director and helped lay groundwork for our comprehensive campaign. 2) In his third year, Matt identified and made strategic systems improvements. For example, by surveying best practices among peer organizations, he built cross-departmental support for adoption of Salesforce.com’s Nonprofit Success Pack and for increasing staff capacity to administer it. Matt also conducted a benchmarking study and analysis of our graduate student recruiting efforts, the recommendations of which led to an improved approach and substantially increased enrollment. Matt made a significant difference as a leader at IslandWood, and I enthusiastically recommend him for his transitional and interim leadership capabilities.
