Ben's passion and enthusiasm for technology and software craftsmanship is evident in his work; He is always looking for ways to improve our codebase and/or our development processes. Ben's continuous strive for knowledge has led him to a diverse, deep skill set. His knowledge ranges from web UI development to back-end/database development, to testing frameworks and continuous integration server setup and maintenance–all complete with an understanding of OOP and design patterns. As our company has gone through and agile transformation, Ben has been helpful in suggesting process improvements for both the business group and the development group. He has been great at keeping the development group focused to help meet our development goals. I look forward to continuing to work with Ben as he accepts his new role as Agile Team Lead (as of 5/2011). Our group will continue to develop great software–more efficiently–under his guidance.

Foresee was an Answers subsidiary. I was moved over to this company staying within the Answers family. -Coordinated the implementation of a web ad-hoc reporting solution utilizing Jaspersoft and Oracle. -Performance tuned Jaspersoft by acting on metrics gathered from application monitoring solutions New Relic and Zabbix. -Lead developer on a custom report portal for Foresee's largest client. This project required the assembly of a small but talented team of full stack engineers within answers. I worked with ops to build out servers, implement continuous integration, setup DNS, and add application and server monitoring. I had to work with business to understand and estimate requirements. I designed the data model, built the database tables, procedures, and nightly aggregations in oracle. I wrote a majority of the application layer which was in Node JS. I worked with other teams within Foresee to get the first implementation of SSO working with a Node app. Show less

As a Principal Software Engineer, I was asked to: -Design and build a continuous integration platform.-Deliver (write, build, test, deploy) features for Shopper Answers and Shopper Ratings.-Make architectural decisions on how to best integrate and share features across several Answers Cloud Services applications.-Work with QA automation engineers to deliver an acceptance and regression test suite.-Mentor other developers to help them understand how to effectively deliver SaaS applications through unit testing, continuous integration, and working together as a team. I was brought into the Answers Cloud Services division because of my previous successes in building SaaS marketing tools for Fortune 100 e-commerce companies with Easy2. I began my role by implementing many of the best practices we found successful at Easy2 such as continuous integration and automated testing. The most impactful practice I was able to bring to Answers Cloud Services was the thought process of delivering the most important features first and the value of getting them into clients hands as soon as possible. I was able to give insight into different methods of determining what actually is the most important feature for the product and for the client. I believe this is valuable because not working on the right things can be the biggest waste of time in delivering a successful product.-Changed the way applications were deployed by moving from an in-house, ops controlled solution to a jenkins based, development team controlled solution.-Migrated an existing application from an in-house php web framework to Laravel which allowed my team to deliver features at a rapid pace.-Joined a small team that was delivering a new, from the ground up, product ratings and reviews platform designed for Fortune 500 retailers and manufacturers.-Coordinated and implemented a new, internal development process for a product that was 100% developed by consultants with the goal of bringing all of the development, estimation, planning, and QA in house. Director of Software Engineering

Jul 2012 - Aug 2013
Helped build a first class engineering team through hiring, educating, and giving team members responsibility over the applications they built and maintained. Led the company through a transition in the way they delivered software from a traditional waterfall process to an iterative and highly adaptive process. This process helped deliver software that was more accurate to business needs, quicker to market, and more maintainable by the development team.
