I managed a number of projects under Chris’ direction at Trafficmaster where he managed to combine the skills of a technical architect with the commercial sense of a senior business sponsor. His decision making, direction and clarity of thinking were key to the success of these projects, and the drive and passion he had for the work spread to the teams he worked with. Even when projects were proving difficult or frustrating, his optimism and sense of purpose kept us going. I’d recommend him without hesitation, and would hope to work with him again in the future.

Chris worked for me for eleven years from 2001 to 2012. During this period he was Technical Director of Trafficmaster and he oversaw all technology projects and technical activities of the business. He was the key architect of Trafficmaster’s engineering teams for two decades and all of the technical pioneering done by the Trafficmaster in the UK was undertaken by Chris’s teams. He has a very deep knowledge of hardware, high and low level software, wireless communications and database technologies. There can be few people worldwide who have such a broad technical knowledge of Telematics technology. Amongst the numerous innovative projects Chris led were • The traffic monitoring network in the UK • UK Road Pricing • Fleetstar (Fleet Tracking) • Trackstar (Stolen Vehicle Tracking) • Vehicle Probe data • Off board satellite navigation The range of activities undertaken over the eleven years Chris worked for me has been enormous. Amongst many other things he has run projects, outsourced teams to India, consulted for the government and supported technical sales of large projects. Chris approached all his responsibilities with professionalism, intelligence and commitment. He was hard working, diligent and not afraid to take responsibility. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him and would recommend him highly.

DELIVERING RESULTS: • Safety Analytics driver behaviour assessment module for fleet management system. • PAYD/PHYD Insurance products in collaboration with insurance companies in UK and USA. • OBD integration with ECUs for specific US vehicle manufacturers. • “Smartnav” – traffic aware off-board gps satellite navigation guidance system. •“Trackstar” – the approved Stolen Vehicle Tracker for Jaguar Landrover and BMW in UK. •“TrafficLine” – 1st location aware traffic information phone service. • b & eCall - private service with O2 and BT. • Supported merger and acquisition activities including acquisition of Trafficmaster by Vector Capital. Conducted due diligence on a number of companies. Recommended the purchase of Yeoman Navigation which was subsequently acquired and the technology widely deployed in Trafficmaster products. INNOVATION HIGHLIGHTS: • Vision for a common IVU embedded GPS/GSM platform used across multiple services over 5 generations of product, delivering competitive advantage in economies of scale and flexibility. • Combined vehicle tracking from tens of thousands of vehicles with advanced, in-house, map-matching techniques to derive real road-speed database (sold to a major map data provider). • Delivered innovative corridor based speed camera warning solution with remotely upgradable database. • Driver behaviour analysis system capable of delivering results from in-vehicle accelerometer and GPS data or GPS alone.
