His main research at the Mexico Center is related to energy dynamics in North America (shale gas development in the United States and Mexico’s energy reform) and their effect on petrochemical value chains, agricultural productivity and food dependency in Mexico. Duhalt has spoken about energy issues at various conferences and events in the U.S., Mexico, England, Switzerland, Wales and Panama. Prior to joining UDLAP in 2013, he completed his Ph.D. in economic geography at the University of Sussex. His thesis analyzes the main political economy drivers that shaped the development of the petrochemical industry in Mexico over the last few decades. For his conceptual and empirical contributions, he received the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award from the Economic Geography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers in 2012. Show less

My PhD thesis combines analysis of the political economy of Mexico with the global value chain approach to examine i) how the development path Mexico has followed in recent decades has shaped the trajectory of the petrochemical industry and ii) the type of governance structures prevailing in transactional relationships between state-owned (PEMEX) and private petrochemical firms in the Veracruz cluster. The discussion is situated in a wider empirical context that pays considerable attention to economic, political, and institutional factors (e.g. the economic liberalisation process embarked on by Mexico in the 1980s and 1990s, the institutionalisation of sectoral regulatory policies, the reliance of the government on oil revenues, the implications of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the U.S. energy security strategy) that help us understand the current standing of the petrochemical industry and the quality of inter-firm linkages in the locality. My research interests focus on value chain analysis, geographical political economy, emerging multinationals from emerging economies, the political economy of oil and natural gas, industrial governance. You can get my PhD thesis from: http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/7600/ Show less

Duties: fieldwork, analysis of data and report writing, sample design. In addition to being research assistant, I also completed my bachelor dissertation under the supervision of the CIESAS-Golfo director at that time. My research focused on examining the determinants and consequences of the crisis the pinneaple industry in Mexico experienced in 2000 and 2001. This entailed to live and conduct fieldwork in the most important producing area of the country for a period of six months. Show less
