Eco-tourism Business Officer

The Eco-Tourism Business Officer is one of many positions funded by Global Affairs Canada through the International Youth Internship Program. This program was developed to give recent graduates professional hands on work experience in an international setting. As the Eco-Tourism Business Officer, I work within the Tourism and Hospitality Management department at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology. Some of my responsibilities include: Meta-analysis for the viability of agro-tourism in the central Kenyan/Nyeri county area. Development of an internal database that catalogues a complete list of flora in the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology Wildlife Conservancy. Compiling research to create a reference text with samples of a variety of flora present on the University grounds. Program review and development: -Review of the existing Tourism and Hospitality diploma program -Assessing the relevance of existing programs -Development of the proposed “Adventure Tourism” course The opportunity to work alongside DeKUT had given me not only tangible hard skills that I can carry on into future endeavours, but also a collection of soft skills I wouldn’t have been able to develop to the same level if not for the international setting. Working along side St. Michaels Outdoor Education program and the Salt Spring Adventure Company I lead week long outdoor excursions for high school students on Salt Spring Island. Yearly excursions are mandatory for students to graduate from grade 12. The goal for this program is to expose students to an unfamiliar environment and have them practice their leadership skills. Some of the activities that that the kids participate in are: sea kayaking, hiking, camping, leadership games, marine biology, permaculture farming, yoga, and classes on sustainable energy. Northern Lights Wildlife Wold Centre is a major wildlife tourist destination between Golden and Revelstoke, British Columbia. The Wolf Centre's mandate is to properly educate the public wolves and their role in the environment. As a Customer Service Lead at Bed Bath and Beyond my main responsibility was the training and development of new and current staff/managers. Training included new hire orientations, product training, and safety product training (WHIMIS, MSDS, ladder safety, and PPE).
