It was a real pleasure to have supervised Joe on his industrial placement. Joe demonstrated a professional and mature attitude throughout and he showed great ownership of the project work he was leading. Joe combined a high level of technical curiosity with great teamwork and collaboration, which enabled him to complete some very valuable and useful research.

Leonardo Lombardini

I had the opportunity to supervise Joe when he was an exchange student at Texas A&M University in the first part of 2019. It was a real pleasure to interact and work with him. He was always prepared, dedicated, and passionate to learn about the various aspects of production, postharvest, and quality parameters of coffee. He has a great personality and everyone in my team really enjoyed interacting with him. I highly recommend him.

I spearhead R&D for novel sensing technologies across a broad range of industries including pharmaceuticals, FMCG and aerospace/defence. Examples of these technologies would be thin-film gauge sensors and thermal effusivity probes. Sensors have been created in partnership with blue-chip companies and governmental bodies such as the UK MoD and US FDA on a range of subjects including residual water in fuel/solvents and counterfeit product detection.Analytical Technique Development & Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) - Aiding the development of a thermal technique for the detection of residual water in solvents and detection of API concentration in a powder mix / porosity of tablets. Performed ‘gauge R&R’ analysis for improved understanding of instrumentation error sources.Extensive MATLAB, Solidworks, Simulink & Python Experience - Statistically driven data analysis and creation of engaging visuals, including optimisations of sensor measurement principle. Modelling of sensor unsteady state heat transfer. Improvement in manufacturing consistency via the production of 3D moulds in Solidworks 2020.Sensor Manufacture & Calibration - Production of a 3D calibration map to eliminate thermal drift and predict concentration based on correlation with the measurement principle. Experience with soldering electronic circuits.Standardisation, Efficiency & Safety - Implementation of building/testing SOPs for sensor types and sample preparation. Maintenance of ISO 9001:2015 framework and responsible for lab safety review and COSHH assessments.

Responsible for multiple projects in roasting fundamentals including: physico-chemical and organoleptic effects of early/late stage roasting manipulation, realtime tracking for improved roaster performance, aroma retention, breakdown of selected compounds via roasting, & colour measurement with grind setting / roast variation. Within these projects I pioneered innovations in antioxidant action (WO2022144238A1), customisation of fines % for extraction (trade secret), & shelf life improvements (invention disclosed). Organised the 'H&S management of change review' for the, installation of, and analysed data from an in-line control system. This study aided purchasing/research decisions and quality risk assessments for the JDE roaster network.Performed patent landscaping for roasting control and green bean technology; informing future research avenues. Experience in grinding, SCC, and roasting unit operations on plant and pilot plant scale. Conducted technical research projects in Utrecht, The Netherlands.Conceived and created an 'R&D Intern Handbook', enabling future generations of interns to 'hit the ground running' with reference guide to tasks and questions they might be embarrassed to ask about!Initiated collaborations between Texas A&M University and JDE in Latin America and for analytical technique development.

A self-obtained academic position at the Norman Borlaug Institute's Center for Coffee Research & Education. Alongside professors and PhD students, I wrote multiple pieces including a comprehensive paper on F1 hybrid physical properties: 'Coffea arabica F1 Hybrid Centroamericano (H1): Physical Characterisation & Roasting Profile Adaptations.' Fundamental properties (density, size, colour etc.), moisture sorption isotherms with fitted GAB & BET models, & hardness analysis.'Health-Related Compounds in Brewed Coffee' was an interdisciplinary literature review examining health effects of coffee compounds selected on their bioavailability and degree of health action. This work lead to a patent during my time at JDE (WO2022144238A1).My side projects include 'Pre-treatment of C. canephora and physical properties of C. arabica via different post-harvest processing methods'Attended the 'Speciality Coffee Expo & Re:co Symposium' in Boston 2019

Shadowed the process engineering team during the planning phase of a rig shutdown; sitting in on asset planning meetings and working alongside a senior engineer. I was introduced to Aspen: HYSIS, adaptations for loss prevention and suction jet pumps.
