City Year is an educational non-profit that works to close the achievement gap by partnering with Title I schools across the United States. As an AmeriCorps member, I collaborate with a team of 8 peers who are passionate about equitable education and culturally responsive teaching at an elementary school in South Seattle. City Year uses a "Whole School, Whole Child" model by providing academic tutoring and behavioral mentoring to individual students, as well as working alongside school staff to create, implement, and run schoolwide initiatives. Some of my daily duties include morning greetings, lesson planning, classroom support, small group sessions, behavioral goal setting, playground supervision, planning and running academic and enrichment sessions for our City Year after-school program, and much more. As a site, we participate in regular Race & Equity workshops and organize/attend physical service days throughout the year. Show less

As an undergraduate, I assisted Dr. Carl Gwinn in his research into the astronomical phenomenon known as fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs are bright, short lived, bursts of light which are currently of unknown origin. They are very rare and very difficult to capture. Alongside undergraduates, graduates, and Dr. Gwinn, I analyzed data from these phenomenon in order to gain a better understanding of their variety and behavior. I also developed mathematical models which could be used to describe their behavior, as well as explain their origin. Show less
