President
-
2005 - 2006
The SUNY Student Assembly is the largest University student government in the world. The President is responsible for forming a Cabinet and working with Representatives to support SUNY students politically and procedurally. 413,000 students are represented by 30 part-time staff (full-time students). The students attend 64 campuses and include undergraduates, graduates, working adults, and members of every field of study. As President, I sought to expand the Assembly from a classic "student representation" organization into one that engaged in lobbying of the state, individual schools, and the University around student priorities. Among the innovations implemented: a regular system of geographic representation, a completely student-directed, systematic Lobby Day, political linkages with the City University of New York, a manual for student governments on voter registration, political message consistency, and a statewide media tour in support of student priorities. Ex-Officio Voting Trustee
-
2005 - 2006
As President of the SUNY Student Assembly, I was given a voting seat on the SUNY Board of Trustees. My goals were to use this position to complement the new disciplined advocacy of the Assembly. Accomplishments in this regard include: heading off a disastrous restructuring of the SUNY tuition system, spearheading a successful move back toward NYS's funding obligation of community colleges, forging a permanent link between the Student Assembly and the corresponding Faculty bodies, defending academic freedom against proposals such as the Academic Bill of Rights, raising important questions about SUNY's administration of K-12 charter schools, and preventing overly standardized assessment of the diverse SUNY schools. While on the Board, I served on the SUNY Chancellor Search Committee, and was involved in all aspects of the search, including recruitment, vetting and interviewing. Show less
