This letter of recommendation for Tyrel Jacobsen is based completely on the interaction between Tyrel and the FSI staff during the Frontiers of Science Institute. FSI is an intensive, six-week program that correlates closely to college in that it places students in a residence hall, requires them to attend rigorous classes and complete in-depth research in one of several science fields. Exposed to curricula encompassing current frontiers of science, students in FSI are expected to assume both the roles of college students and budding research scientists. They complete coursework and laboratory activities in engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, earth, physical and space science. Outdoor education is heavily emphasized, requiring students to actively engage in demonstrative learning activities in environmental education while on team-building, field-based instructional camping trips. Most importantly, the students conduct collegiate level research in their primary scientific field of interest under the supervision and guidance of university professors and graduate students. Academic Productivity and Potential: While in FSI, Tyrel and his research partner researched, designed, and developed a means to capture solar power in order to produce biodiesel. Using almost entirely recycled materials, Tyrel successfully built a solar oven capable of reaching temperatures needed to complete the transferification reaction, thus producing biodiesel. Upon successful completion of the research project, Tyrel and his research partner went on to develop an engaging and professional presentation to showcase their research and subsequently earned FSI’s Outstanding Team Research Award. Personal and Social Attributes: Tyrel is an extremely positive and cheerful individual. No matter what challenge was put in front of him, Tyrel excelled with a smile on his face. His enthusiasm for all things STEM was readily apparent as he confidently navigated his class assignments and research duties. Tyrel is extremely outgoing and his natural leadership is readily apparent when working in groups. It is for these reasons and many others Tyrel was considered to be one of the outstanding FSI scholars of 2010. Suggestions for Success: I recommend that Tyrel continue to let his natural outgoing and positive personality shine. Tyrel is a highly intelligent, capable and confident individual. I have nothing but the utmost confidence in Tyrel and his abilities to excel at anything he puts his mind to. Ratings: Ratings are based on an advanced scientific curriculum comparable to freshman/sophomore level college work. In each of the three courses taught, students were given a rating of poor, good, excellent or superior. Tyrel earned the letter grade ‘A’ for the FSI course.

I assisted the drama club in which Tyrel participated. He was diligent, dedicated, prompt, and helpful. I really enjoyed working with him! He also proofread a couple of my manuscripts and caught several errors that had slipped past my eyes. Really appreciated that!
