Professional "water-woman" (kitesurfing, wing foiling, surf foiling) sponsored by Duotone Kiteboarding, Fanatic Foiling, Ion Action Sports, and Quobba Fins. I create content for social media, write articles for various magazines in the industry, travel globally for photoshoots, and work with the brand to test gear for women riders. I have developed self-discipline to balance vigorous training and travel schedules with other work and academic pursuits. I’ve acquired the ability to mix broadly with a diverse group of people from around the world. Through my writing, I have learned to communicate with a broad audience and take pleasure in my efforts to inspire young females in the sport. I was a part of a non-for-profit film project, in which I traveled to the rugged south coast of Madagascar - one of the last frontiers in surfing - with a film crew and two fellow female professionals. With footage from the trip, we created a short film called 118 ft of Freedom, where we reflected on the sexism persistent in kitesurfing while trying to display a power in our riding more commonly associated with male riders. The film was selected for the Sörf Film Fest, Sport Film Festival Rotterdam, and One Ocean Film Tour. AWSI Wingfoiler of the Year 2021 Athlete website: https://oliviarosejenkins.com/

I began by shadowing the Maui District Health Officer during the triage of patients for COVID-19 drive-through testing sites in Maui. I helped design follow-up questions for those that were accepted for testing. I worked with one individual in a high-stress environment to input demographic and COVID-19 molecular results into a data set and organized it for simplified analysis. I then translated the data into insights that could be used for contact tracing, education, and planning by various agencies. I continued this role until drive- through testing in Maui was complete. I learned how community based public health protocols operate during the outbreak of a global pandemic.

My research involved serological analysis of dengue, Zika, and West Nile virus-infected blood samples. Recent outbreaks of Zika in flavivirus endemic regions indicated a need for a sensitive and specific serodiagnostic test to discriminate between the many flaviviral infections. Previous research demonstrated significant cross-reactivity between flaviviral antibodies, making serological diagnosis difficult. My role was to generate wildtype and mutant virus-like particles by cell culture, complete ELISA tests with the flaviviral infected serums, and then test their specificity and sensitivity. My results were published in Emerging Microbes and Infections Journal, Volume 9, Issue 1, 2020.

Medical scribe for Dr. Avani Lakhani. In this role, I documented patient histories, chief complaints, physical examinations, medications, and diagnoses into an electronic medical records software. This allowed Dr. Lakhani to increase her daily appointments as she would no longer have to spend time filling out charts. I helped her with around 25 patients per shift. I was responsible for charting all patient medical information into an electronic medical records software to improve physician efficiency and patient interactions. I documented initial patient interviews, workups, results, and differential diagnoses. Each shift I worked with a single provider, but over two years I worked closely with 20 ER physicians and gained an insight into the different styles of patient care. The physicians entrusted my skills to capture all pertinent detailed information. As a result, I learned how to effectively communicate in a high-stress environment where it was imperative that I kept track of important information in real-time.

The Boisvert Lab investigated the potential role of the interleukin IL-37 in atherosclerosis. I assisted the postdoctoral researcher with various tasks around the lab. I cataloged and organized new primers, tested them by PCR, and visualized the results by gel electrophoresis. I refined my basic lab skills and was introduced to other techniques such as cell culture, qPCR, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, ELISA, and western blotting. Developed critical thinking skills. In 2010, the PEW Charitable Trust conducted a nationwide assessment of policies and practices that affect children’s oral health. The results indicated that Hawaii did not complete routine surveys to track children’s dental statuses. The Maui Oral Health Task Force completed a pilot survey to assess the feasibility of routine surveys in the county. My roles included organizing the data from this survey, completing statistical analyses, reviewing the results, and contextualizing the findings with previous data across other states. With real-life exposure, I learned about the steps required in epidemiological study designs. I co-authored a paper published in the Hawai'i Journal of Medicine and Public Health 2016: Jenkins OR, Routley S, Pedro-Gomes T, Pang L. A Pilot Dental Survey on Maui. Hawaii J Med Public Health 2016; 75(11): 332-336.
