Research Support Technician | REefVOLUTION project
-
Jan 2023 - Present
I am employed in the REefVOLUTION (Estrategias holísticas de bioremediación marina) project (TED2021-131303B-I00) as senior technichian, and support researcher. REefVOLUTION, is an inter-, multi-disciplinary and holistic project. The main objective is to exploit Biorock-based artificial reefs colonized by benthic filterfeeding and suspension-feeding organisms for bioremediation of the coastal seabed of the Balearic Islands, which is affected by the continuous discharge of treated/reclaimed water. Analysis of the vulnerability of protected marine invertebrates in the Balearic Islands through populations genetic analysis. The main activities include underwater sampling of protected marine invertebrates in marine reserves of the Balearic Islands. Field expeditions in La Mola research station (Menorca), and in the Parque Nacional Marítimo-Terrestre del Archipiélago de Cabrera. Collection of zooplankton larvae through plankton net. Morphological identification of the macroinvertebrates, DNA extraction of the samples and amplification of mitochondrial and nuclear genes to set up a sequences reference database of the target species, aiming to study the genetic structure of populations. Development of massive sequencing techniques to improve the monitoring of protected species. Show less

CIRCA-LEBA 2022 Oceanographic Survey | B/O Ramón Margalef
-
Nov 2022 - Nov 2022
Scientific survey arranged by the Oceanographic Center of the Balearic Islands (IEO-COB) aiming the study of sedimentary circalitoral and bathyal benthic communities of the region Levantino-Balear (from Cabo de Gata to Cap de Creus, and Balearic Islands). During the survey, abiotic (sediment and microplastics) and biotic (biological and genetic) samples were collected using Shipek grab, and epibenthic "Jennings" beam trawl. In addition, videotransects and bathymetric mapping with a multibeam echosounder were carried out to investigate the study area. Show less

Curricular Intership

May 2021 - Mar 2022
Curricular internship on cryptobenthic biodiversity of Mediterranean subtidal habitat. I evaluated the effectiveness of two different Standardized Sampling Structures (ARMS and BenthosBox) through a multidisciplinary and integrated approach including: DNA metabarcoding, photoanalysis and morphological-based identification of macroinvertebrates. I experienced molecular laboratory procedures: bulk DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, PCR, library preparation, third generation sequencing by the MinION sequencer (Oxford Nanopore Technologies) and bioinformatic analyses. Using both molecular and traditional approach allowed me to assess the communities settled into ARMS and BenthosBox, evaluating the overall diversity (Bacteria, Plantae, Animalia) in Palinuro (South Tyrrhenian Sea), an underexplored area. Curricular traineeship at LOSEM (Laboratorio di Oceanologia Sperimentale ed Ecologia Marina)
-
Oct 2018 - Jan 2019
Traineeship on physical oceanography and extreme events of Mediterranean Sea. During my month at LOSEM, I produced 30 years time-series data on Sea Surface Temperature (SST) using the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) and the Civitavecchia Coastal Environment monitoring system (C-CEMS). Then, I investigated long-term trend and changes in SST assessing spatial-temporal occurence of extreme events (e.g. medicane and waterspouts) in the Mediterranean Sea.
