I conducted my Masters research in Dr. Kanthasamy's lab, here I evaluated novel compounds for effectiveness at reducing activation of wild type microglia. My research required skills in cell culture of both primary cells and microglial cell lines, western blotting, immunocytochemistry, luminex bead assay, griess assay, MTS assay, RT-qPCR, isolation of RNA, generation of cDNA, and critical analysis of data including statistical analysis using GraphPad Prism. At Mid-State Education I work with disabled students caring for their health and educational needs. All of the students that I work with a re non-verbal, and all have a wide range of medical conditions due to their disabilities. Working here as made me very proficient in the care of individuals with seizures and non-verbal injury assessment. One of the most valuable skills that this position has taught me is the skill of patience. Working with students who cannot communicate in conventional ways has caused me to be very level headed in demanding situations and calmly work toward a solution that will be of the greatest service to the student. My responsibilities at Pace Analytical included making testing kits for various companies contracted with Pace Labs. I handled various chemicals and was expected to be proficient in the MSDS and uses for each of the chemicals. Additionally I was tasked with shipping and packaging the kits that I assembled. • Science Center Coordinator

My experience at the St. Cloud Technical College has been very similar to my experience as a teaching assistant. One large difference being the diversity and broad scale ability of the students. There were language barriers to overcome, and I learned that an explanation illustrating a concept for one student may not be as effective for the next student. Needing to differentiate was beneficial for both me and students I was addressing. I was able gain a much more practical knowledge of chemistry and the biological sciences. In addition to working with students, I collaborated with faculty to facilitate review sessions on classroom topics Show less

As a TA my main task was to maintain a smooth running and safe lab environment. I was expected to assist students with lab procedures and answer conceptual questions in a way that guided the student to discovering the answer for themselves rather than simply giving them the answer. I was expected to know and understand the chemical hazards of each chemical in use in the lab and how to properly address spills or contamination.

    • Student Security Officer
      • Aug 2010 - Dec 2013

I held two positions as a Security Officer; the first position was a general student officer. As a student officer I was charged with monitoring the Saint John's campus and acting as the primary law enforcement for the campus. In this position I would be confronted with many emergency and dangerous situations which helped me to develop the ability to keep a cool and level head in most any situation. The second position I held was Student Security Supervisor. In this position I still maintained the duties above, however I was also expected to handle all student officer scheduling, hiring, programming, training, and discipline. My work as student supervisor also demanded that I be ready to review student actions and report to the security director or outside law enforcement. Show less
