This was a really fun rotation and I even had the opportunity to perform chest compressions on a patient that coded due to hypovolemia in the OR. I also participated in surgical consults during 24 hour shifts and observed the surgeons during their clinical hours. In this rotation, I focused on improving my surgical assisting skills such as suturing, arterial stent placement, electrocautery, piloting the laparoscopic camera, familiarizing myself with surgical instruments, placing urine catheters, and was even given the opportunity to observe several 3D robotic assisted laparoscopic surgeries. Surgeries where I scrubbed-in include emergent sigmoidectomy due to perforated diverticulitis with abscess, emergent ruptured cornual ectopic pregnancy, rectal cancer sigmoidectomy and colostomy creation, robotic assisted hernia repairs, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, parathyroidectomy, breast excisional biopsy using savi and needle local, femoral artery bypass, arterial stent placement, carotid endarterectomy, and toe amputations.

With a goal to work in Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics was the perfect rotation to start out as a PA student. The ever changing anatomy and physiology of children and adolescents provided the ideal opportunity to progress my skills in the physical exam and history taking. One of the most impactful experiences that helped my progression were physicals for adolescents returning to sports after known infection with SARS-CoV-2. Part of the management for these patients included an ECG, Troponin-T levels, and a chest x-ray. Much to my surprise, we had a few patients' whose diagnostics returned abnormal with signs pointing to a likely diagnosis of myocarditis. Thankfully, management was only conservative in these cases, but the experience unlocked a knowledge base that will serve me in future differential diagnoses.Other pediatric experiences include but are not limited to: congenital heart defects, post-concussive syndrome, fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains, croup, bronchiolitis, ankyloglossia, epididymitis, ENT disorders and infections, and oral candidiasis.

    • EMT and Spanish Interpreter; Volunteer
      • Jan 2013 - Jan 2019

The Hope Clinic provides 100% free services to the needs of the uninsured and underserved population of Salt Lake City, Utah. They have volunteer workers providing healthcare in a myriad of services including healthcare in family medicine, OB/GYN, pediatrics, dermatology, as well as general and orthopedic surgery just to name a few. I was initially introduced to the clinic in 2013 to be a Spanish interpreter for the orthopedic clinic once a week. Additionally, I served as a surgical tech for minor carpal tunnel surgeries. After obtaining my license as an EMT-basic, I progressed to the walk-in clinic where, at times, we cared for up to one hundred patient's a day. Lastly, I was given the opportunity to act as surgical first assist in the repair of a de Quervain's tenosynovitis. Other experience here includes medical scribe, patient triage, updating patient charts, obtaining patient vitals, front desk clerical work, patient referrals, as well as janitorial services.
