Welfare Watch Volunteer
-
Jul 2019 - Present
Welfare watch is a project that was started last year at the Students' Union that helps intoxicated and distressed students to be able to get into a position where it is safe for them to get home after a night out. As a volunteer I spend my shifts looking after students who are ill, either physically or mentally, leading to a greater understanding of people's well being. This role has given me conflict resolution and health and safety training as well as giving me the ability to work will in pressured situations.

As supervisor I am in charge of volunteers on shifts, from coordinating the rota to ensuring that volunteers have the right equipment resulting in excellent organisational skills. When in this role I am tasked with the decision making and safeguarding for those on shift. This also comes with theresponsibility of ensuring that the service is open on as many nights as possible with the correct number of volunteers; we have opened 72% of possible shifts in first semester and 75% in the second semester which has been a great accomplishment.

I was recently appointed as the President of the new Welfare Watch Committee where I am responsible for the safe and effective running of Welfare Watch and the committee that manages it. I am tasked with managing budget, liaising with the Students' Union and recruiting volunteers, all of which enhance my problem solving and communication skills. Alongside our marketing officer, I assist with the running of our social media to help the project grow; we currently have over 40 volunteers, have helped over 100 students and is continually expanding and receiving praise from inside and outside the Students' Union.
