My position as a medical malpractice attorney granted me the privilege of working with healthcare professionals throughout Michigan. While I have always held the medical community in high esteem, this opportunity accentuated how lucky we are as Michiganders to have the medical talent we have. In this role I represented neurosurgeons, social workers, nurses, oncologists, pediatricians, general practitioners, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, obstetricians, anesthesiologists, and gastroenterologists. Notable Responsibilities and Events: 1) Secured dismissal of amount in controversy exceeding $5,000,000.00 via motion and oral argument. 2) Crafted case strategy and risk analysis regarding multi-million dollar disputes. 3) Successfully litigated on behalf of sophisticated clients in high-stake matters. While my time as a temporary litigation attorney on the Covid-19 Eviction Prevention Team was short lived due to the mere nature of the position, it was a monumentally meaningful experience for me as both a person and professional. In the midst of Covid-19 economic upheaval, I found myself as the line of last defense between Michigan families and the cold winter waiting for them outside their doorstep. This position quickly transitioned into a passion project filled with 2:00 AM client calls for those who were working third shift, acting as a liaison between clients and community resources to utilize federal funding, and at times handling over 15 hearings in one day. Of the 101 households I represented, only one household received an eviction on their record. A majority of families were able to enter negotiated payment plans with their landlords utilizing emergency funding, while others were able to utilize community resources to transition to alternate housing while avoiding an eviction on their record. The highlight of my time at LLA as an attorney was successfully arguing a Motion to Set Aside Judgement and subsequently winning at trial. This resulted in the dismissal of a $20,000.00 monetary judgement against a single mother of two toddlers who legally withheld her rent due to a mold infestation. Notable Responsibilities and Events: 1) Strategically utilized cross-agency communication and resources to mitigate pandemic-related homelessness in Detroit. 2) Secured continued housing stability of over 100 Michigan households via negotiation and litigation, including trial. 3) Apprised clients of potential risks and costs associated with each course of action. Litigation Clerk / Litigation Attorney
-
Jul 2019 - Jul 2020
I began working as a law clerk at Hewson & Van Hellemont while waiting for Michigan Bar results. After passing on my first attempt, I became an attorney in November 2019. Shortly thereafter, in March 2020, the global pandemic of Covid-19 shut down the courts. As such, I had the unique experience of learning to litigate from a keyboard and screen in addition to the in-person litigation experience I acquired during clinicals. This position allowed me to continue to represent the same client base as I previously represented while expanding into new subject areas and clientele. Notable Responsibilities and Events: 1) Drafted successful dispositive motions that saved my clients over $2,000,000.00 when compared to the amount in controversy. 2) Explained available courses of action and possible repercussions of matters to multinational Fortune 100 client with over $112 billion in total assets. 3) Litigated on behalf of Michigan's residual market mechanism for automobile insurance, Michigan Automobile Insurance Placement Facility. 4) Litigated on behalf of Fortune 100 clients with $16.9 billion to $112 billion in total assets.
