Thesis Title: Limb Muscle Function during Suspensory Behavior in Sloths (Xenarthra:Pilosa)• Collected and analyzed data on hindlimb muscle function in three-toed sloths in Costa Rica using subcutaneous EMG electrodes and corresponding video data• Analyzed force data in MATLAB to elaborate on actions of hindlimb muscles during suspensory walking, specifically the substrate reaction forces associated with a stride

I worked in a lab with Dr. Blob to study biomechanics and evolutionary morphology currently. I researched the famous waterfall-climbing gobies of Hawaii and how the attack angle of their predators affects the success rate of prey capture. I also helped handle, clean, and feed the lab iguanas and turtles.

I worked in a microbiology lab with Dr. Dong for a full year. I worked on two experiments revolving around the effects of low concentrations of ethanol on C. elegans. First, I saw how ethanol at varying concentrations affected progeny. Second, I saw how gut integrity was affected by ethanol.

I worked in a biophysics lab as an intern over the summer before my junior year. Specifically, I worked as a geneticist and microbiologist, creating and cloning DNA and plasmids so that specific genes may be expressed in T. brucei, the parasite that causes 'sleeping sickness' and devastates communities in Africa and South America. The goal of expressing certain genes is to, eventually, examine the specific unique biophysical properties of the parasite by isolating and purifying the dynein motor proteins. Show less
