MSc Thesis: researching irrigation practices among farmers situated along the Broken River, Victoria, in order to understand changing farming strategies during times of increased pressures on water resources. Ultimately, with my research, I hope to contribute to an understanding of adaptive environmental policy targeted at sustainable water management in the face of destructive and relentless climate change. In a team of five students, we were responsbile for evaluating the potential of implementing timber tracking tools for the Global Timber Tracking Network (GTTN). Illegal logging is a pervasive problem, contributing to a range of environmental, social, political, and economic problems. The GTTN is active in the fight against illegal logging by stimulating the use of timber tracking tools in the timber trade sector. In a team of thirteen students, Ashoka Netherlands tasked us with identifying possibilities for triggering co-creation between companies and social entrepreneurs in order to create sustainable social value at scale, taking into account various political, economic, cultural, and historical contexts per region of the world. We have provided Ashoka with a different lens to analyse the scaling out, deep, and up of social innovations in order to benefit a greater number of people. During my semester abroad at the University of Vienna, I was able to partake in a student project regarding the topic Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in an imaginary town in Indonesia. This five-month project has taught me how to source and analyse baseline data, how to account for a multitude of social groups (e.g. gender, race, religion), and how to translate data into recommendations to improve the livelihoods of an impoverished community.
