Salmaan is one of those people who lights up a room, but by getting the people in it to shine, rather than taking the spotlight himself. Although he can do this pretty amazingly well too, if needed - check out his TED work. I got to know Salmaan during a week-long senior leadership offsite, where I appreciated his subtle skill in creating just the right environment to have creative, effective, meaningful conversations that helped catalyse a number of projects. I then invited him to work with another senior leadership group, where he quickly won over the recalcitrant group and helped us navigate some tricky terrain. Not easy, but something he's mastered over the years, making him someone I would work with again in a heartbeat.

Salmaan has unique talent as a facilitator, coach and consultant. I had the pleasure of working with him at two separate occasions. At both, he provided services as a facilitator and coach to improve the team spirit and working conditions of what have been two very challenged teams. Whether it is an in-person workshop or on-line, Salmaan has a unique way of reaching out to people he has never seen before and is always able to find a strong personal connection that he establishes in no time. Over my career I worked with many coaches and facilitators but found Salmaan’s talent to read the room and instill a positive atmosphere outstanding. He combines high emotional intelligence with creativity and subject matter knowledge. Any professional team would be most lucky to have him as a facilitator and coach.

In 2009 I was able to be a part of the first TEDx in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and even in Europe. For the three years that followed I would coordinate the team of 150 volunteers working on the event day. Years later a documentary was made about the 10th anniversary, in which I was brought back into the magic and vibe of what TEDx represents and the power of the community. In 2019 I was invited to join the board as we embarked on our eleventh edition. And now, as is the seasons, we enter our twelfth years with a new team, a new time and an incredible team of people wanting to make the world a better place. It is a pleasure and honour to be heading this team and I look forward to what we will create together. The combination of what I do makes me a process artist. I genuinely believe in the power of connection. By balancing professionalism with humanity, I find fun, creative ways to solve the more minor and more significant challenges that we face. Currently, I work as a Freelance Executive Consultant, a Speaker/Moderator for events & projects, and I develop Masterclasses and Online courses. The topics I focus on are Leadership Development, Culture Strategy & Change, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI), Transforming Frustrations and developing Action & Accountability. I work by stepping, with one foot, in a team or organisation and supporting them internally, addressing interventions and building sustainable behaviour to change the company culture positively. I have been guiding and taking people on journeys since forever. These journey’s involved designing, organising & facilitating summer schools to leadership journey’s abroad, each time getting people to connect with themselves, each other and waking up to the world around them. No matter the size, whether it is live in person or online, I love to bring people together. These gatherings can be through crafted sessions or high stake organised events. I use such interventions and moments to break open dialogues and get the most important topics on the table. Often an organisation will have a clear mission and vision, values, and even a laid-out strategy. But they struggle with onboarding their entire organisation, getting each person to embody the company’s mission, and making it their own. Show less

Working with the newly emerged "Global E-Business" team has been a privilege, joy and a journey. I support this fantastic team with the internal Team culture as they continue to grow and expand. There is an (invisible) Culture Squad that I actively contribute to and gently nudge in an aspiring direction. I act as a sparring partner to the Head of People & Culture and have guided sessions for the Leadership team to help them connect and learn from each other. The Focus is on designing a path for the team that cohesively brings them together on the elements of connection, learning and having fun. My exploration is seeing how to go from the current culture and constantly shifting team and work towards a better collaborative environment where everyone feels a more profound sense of belonging. I think most of all how each person can be their authentic self while serving the business and accomplishing the strategic goals that have been put in place. Show less

After working with the Global Leadership Team a few years ago, I joined TFS to support the organisation with Leadership Development and culture change. This consultancy is a mix of working closely with the Executive Committee and creating specific interventions that help bring more cohesion within the different teams. Specific projects that I have been working on include; Hosting Country team Town halls Organising company-wide (online) events Working with the 10% top leadership on capacity building Finding creative ways to get each TFS’er to feel like they are a part of a Global growing team. My focus has also been on what kind of Culture TFS currently has and which one we want to create while the organisation transitions from being a local to a global company. What an incredible adventure it had been working with and for Rabobank. My work entailed designing one of the Talent Development programs, "Shape (Y)Our Future", where I helped with specific interventions and how to make it more "real world". This journey is digital, and the challenge I love is how to create a meaningful and impactful leadership program that also connects each individual with themselves and with each other. This Pilot program is now ready to be rolled out for a larger audience, and it has been an absolute joy working with remarkable individuals in making something so tangible. One of my other focus points was Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. I helped support their mission and kind of 'train the trainer' for the Inclusion Agents and the Diversity Ambassadors. By breaking open dialogues and giving practical tools that they can use, I supported these outstanding individuals in their work and continued to have the impact they do. Next to that, I worked as a Board Room Team Coach. Again, guiding different teams in helping them connect, strategise and find ways to work together effectively. Show less

For my years at Better Future, I was an account manager for multinational clients as well as a large number of social business & NGO's. I designed programs, developed the learning and development sectors and facilitating large and small sessions. I did so in person and from a distance, using hybrid formats and bridging the offline and online. I would often compliment these trajectories by means of executive coaching to creating lasting change. My mission is to get people to discover who they are and how they can have a more significant positive impact on the world around them. I used my knowledge & experience on leadership, development, compassion and change in a way that is both personal and invigorating. For more than five years, in my capacity as a senior consultant and strategist, I guided organisations to align purpose, strategy and leadership. I did so by translating ambitions to daily practices and ensuring sustainable growth. Getting everybody on a mission to make a difference. My focus was to create change agents by finding ways to get individuals to become more aware of themselves, their responsibility and gain insights on their inner drive. By harnessing the power of frustration, I like to transfer this energy into a constructive and positive force that can be used to shift things from the inside out, both personally and professionally. A beautiful coming together of that which I truly believe in: doing purposeful work and having a positive impact on society. My focus is in Healthcare and finding ways of loosening up the system, and helping guide those working as healthcare professionals remember why they ever started, why they do the incredible work they do today, gain insights needed to have a positive influence on their working environment and bring it into action. My work includes consulting, designing programmes, facilitating, coaching and strengthening the Better Future team. With my background in online and social media I also coordinate our online marketing and support in getting out story told on the different platforms we have. Currently I am working on programmes to help healthcare organisations create their own 'change agents' that will lift their own teams and institutes to a new level of awareness. These programmes cut through the entire organisation and create a space for the people working therein to co-create their own vision and strategy. It is also based upon changing the culture from within by the people that are a part of it. What is Better Future in short? "We take people on life-changing journeys which are great for the world and good for your business." 1. Great for the world: Contribute to the world’s toughest and most pressing challenges and build personal connections with people from different worlds 2. Good for your business: Ignite purpose, boost performance and strengthen relationships 3. After having the chance to organise 2 editions of the Healthcare Leadership Schools at Better Future, both as a sponsored location and a huge supporter, I started to get to know the lovely group of people working there and could not resist resonating with their vision and ethos of working. Since February 2015 I have been working as an associate consultant for assignments that have to do with facilitating leadership journey's and other inspirational programs crafted to help organisations work from a more purpose based center. What I especially love about this company is connecting Purpose and Impact. Impact by means of having a positive influence on society in some shape or form. Hereunder a short description of Better Future and their vision:Our purpose is to turn dreams on. To show that a more fair, healthy and sustainable world is possible. We take people out of their comfort zone. Into new realities. We unleash passion and imagination. And activate leadership. Until there is no way back. Nothing beats reality. Real leadership happens far away from classrooms and text books. Since 2003 Better Future has organized over 150 leadership journeys in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. My main responsibility was working as a guide & consultant for the association. After many years of working with AMEE as one of the initiating Student Task Force (2005-2008) members in 2005 and a part of the staff (2008-2010), as well as having an active role in starting up the social media platforms, as of the summer of 2013 I am now back in action with AMEE and their staff as a consultant for their online presence/engagement and as the social media coordinator. What I love about AMEE comes down to a few aspects. My passion for Medical Education really kicked off since attending the first conference in 2005. Ever since I've been unable to shake it off. What I also appreciate about AMEE is the staff that organises it. It's because of them I have been able to remain active and because of them that I always feel welcome when I come to help them out during the annual conference. The trust they have in me only motivates me more to the best I can for the conference. Currently, my job entails coordinating the Social Media during the conference and some the stories that are told which can be on the Facebook page in an album or via Instagram and the hashtag #HumansofAMEE Show less

Hearing first of the Charter for Compassion in 2010, and having a few conversations with one of its founders Karen Armstrong, I had started my own movement in Healthcare based on parallel values called "Compassion for Care". We also wrote our own charter, one specifically for healthcare and the desperate need for change and a new way caring for each other. After years of working together I became closer with members of the Charter for Compassion team, namely Marilyn Turkovich. She introduced me into the team and gave me the opportunity to hold international online courses on "Cultivating Compassion in Healthcare". Show less

"Our mission is to bring healthcare back to its core: to truly care for health. The current system is far from where it could be in terms of access to healthcare, viability of current systems and social sustainability. The current economic, ecological and social crises ask for a new approach of leadership in healthcare. And so, we envision a world where every human being can thrive and has the resources for their personal and public health. We offer the upcoming generation in healthcare the opportunity to develop themselves and to cultivate a sustainable change that is rooted in deep intrinsic motivation. Our times of globalisation and visible interconnectedness offer us a way of connection across generations and across cultures. Through this platform, a conducive environment is offered to those working on transformation in healthcare. The platform welcomes all those who want to initiate a positive change and who envision a future that is bright to a community of travellers looking for answers in healthcare. Founded by Oliver de Leeuw and myself, we came together as friends, colleague consultants/trainers with a passion for all that had to do with the online world. We figured that in a world that was exponentially emerging with online developments, how can we guide/train and consult those that wish to bridge the work they do from offline to online? Nameshapers in short is about online curation, coordination and implementation. This landscape has been expanding at a phenomenal level and our role very much adapted to that. What we most of all believe in is working in an honest, sustainable and tailored to the needs of those we work with. STRATEGY Through strategy we have guided our clients through a process of having no idea how to develop their online presence, to getting their entire team become actively involved in its implementation. From figuring out why one wishes to be active online, learning to listen, choosing a strategy and defined goal, finding ways of making it quantifiable, heartfelt action and ending with a cycle of evaluation. This is a process that we create a loop into to follow progress and correctly adjust where needed. EVENTS And how to use Social media at events? A question we often get and one we deal with a lot. From the usage of a hashtag to how to make a more engaging environment for all attending the event, both offline and online. Our role here has more to do with curating and ‘online directing’. As one has a offline conference coordinator, we coordinate the online platforms. Seeing what the goal and intention is of the event, which channels are being used and can be used and together with the conference team enhancing the online presence and engagement while strengthening the offline activities. WORKSHOPS We have created a sustainable way of helping our clients and partners in becoming aware of the online world, the insight on how to use it themselves and guided them in putting it into tangible action. Compassion for Care is a foundation that was initiated in October 2010 by medical students with the belief that we should work from a basic principle of Compassion. Starting with Compassion for ourselves and for those we work with and those we serve. This started as a personal frustration, and one shared by others. We wanted to see something different in healthcare and that there be room and space for creativity and that we remember why ever started working within this field in the first place. It is here that I too was able to direct some of my misguided energy and focus it to finding a way to create a genuine change from within each individual. And for that I believe it boils down to people working within healthcare to remember: Why they ever started working in this field? Why they do so today? How they wish to hold on to that motivation? And what they need to do, no matter how small or big, to change their surroundings in order to create an environment where they can thrive. We have now become a movement, bringing together people from all over the world and all disciplines within healthcare, who believe that Compassion should be the fundamental basis of the current system. This has given taken us to many wonderful places and given us opportunities we would not have dreamed earlier. Currently Compassion for Care is working on many different projects: Dividing our work into Education, Research and the Movement. What I love doing is holding interactive sessions, asking questions and finding ways for individuals and institutions to cultivate and rekindle both their passion and compassion for themselves and their work. We are currently being consulted to help develop current education curricula's within healthcare and find ways of making them 'compassionate'. And I think that is the challenge that we have really taken on: Making 'Compassion' something tangible and finding ways of implementing it in both work as well as personal life. Show less

I have always believed that education and more specifically training has the power to change the world. This conviction comes from the belief that the transfer of knowledge, skills and wisdom comes from asking the right questions. Many years ago we embarked on a journey to start a wide range, multidisciplinary leadership summerschool. In 2008 we had our first version and now we are 6 editions further, together with a foundation that facilitates its organisation amongst other things. Zero Generation is a foundation that has been created by individuals that believe in the fundamental strength of training and being a trainer. It is something I personally discovered in 2005 and till today, is one of my greatest passions. Hereunder you can find a more formal description of the foundation: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Zero Generation is a multidisciplinary team of professional trainers, with European and Worldwide NGO experience in leadership, international project management, training and consultancy; with special interests in healthcare, engineering and organisational development. NGO’s, businesses and academic institutions require skills and competencies to grow. Due to limited accessibility to training, potential remains untapped. We aim at contributing to the empowerment and development of individuals and systems. Moreover we have established a multi-disciplinary platform for creating, acquiring and transferring knowledge, and for developing skills to contribute to capacity strengthening on an international scale. We provide services in training, events’ facilitation, and organisational establishment. In addition we organise tailor made events, including training courses, teambuilding and teamwork events and conferences. Show less

The first of its, and it has been quite the journey so far: Trying to give body and content to a position which entails cultivating compassion within a healthcare institute. I started this job after a series of events and especially a workshop that we, the compassion for care trainers team, gave the higher staff of the MCL last year. A cascade of events created this position, for which my admiration and gratitude to Jelle Prins for his untamed enthusiasm and energy he has put into this project. What followed was me being asked and accepted to fulfil this position which I have been trying to do , with the best of my capabilities. So what does this entail? At first I needed to roam around and get to know the organisation. After some time I was able to find tangible projects and ideas to work on. The work I do currently is based on 3 themes: 1. Awareness: starting with “Why”: How to use this as a guiding line within the organisation, so that individuals, departments and the entire institute becomes more aware of why they work here and why they ever started working within the field of healthcare? 2. Insight: Using Storytelling. By creating platforms for the staff, and its patients, to connect with each other (and themselves) by means of sharing stories to help with motivation and as a part of the employer branding. 3. Action: Activation and Responsibility. By using methodologies such as Open Space and Appreciative Inquiry to help with the change process and empower each individual employee of the MCL the responsibility to be a part of the change process and create an environment that they can function in optimally. The projects that have been created are based on these themes and are either taking place or are rolling out. Please let me know if your interested in this, since I love sharing how to implement such ideas and shall try sharing them soon on the manner hospital environments can be concrete about topics such as these and the way they are carried out. • Jul 2013 - Dec 2013

Whilst Simone Macrooy takes a leave of absence due to her pregnancy, I took over her position as one of the team leaders at the department of Radiotherapy at the VUmc medical center. There are 4 other team leaders and together we coordinate the development, guidance, (re)integration, coaching and improve the functioning of all the lab technicians working there. We form one whole team together with the specialist lab technicians and the head of the administration. My goal has been to see to what extent I can be of service to all my team members and help them the best way I can with their challenges and aspirations. Some of the specific tasks included some administration concerning working days, and all that has to do with the academic development of each person within my team. One of the tasks I took on was to organise a day where we came together with all the teamleaders, specialist lab technicians and head of the administration (Hei-dag) in order to discuss, reflect and build upon the experiences of the last year and how to continue working together as a unified team. This was great since I was allowed to dive into my bag of experience and exercises I have from being a trainer/facilitator. As intense as it was, it was a lovely experience that helped us grow together from that point onwards. What I love about the work here is how I involved I am with those in my team and how I was allowed to explore opportunities and possibilities within the department and the trust that I received from those around me in the manner in which I work. Cudo's to my teamleader Frederieke Vriends for the manner in which she let me be me and gave me room to try out those thing that lay were in resonance with my strengths. Show less

What I loved about this job was that I didn't have to be an expert on the topics we discussed, I enjoyed the challenge of facilitating the process that was involved with getting all my peers from one place to another, from confusion of what the patient had to the moment we could get to a diagnosis and think of all possible options in between. This was done as a part of a research project to see whether the protocols in place during a trauma were all still valid or whether there were adjustments that could be made in them. What fascinated me was how a team of specialists would have to work together so rapidly with such intensity of moments. It was here that my love for the acute part of medicine grew and I remember how much I admired all those that were involved with this process, how quick one needs to be on their feet and what one needs to know to act fast. Creative minds believe that in order to accomplish a good idea, you need the help of others. By collaborating and joining forces with people from different fields of expertise one is able to achieve much more than an individual. Lev Kaupas strive to gather a broad range of entrepreneurs who believe in this collaborative approach. We work, play, create in a communal space where ideas, inspiration, knowledge and feedback are shared. That’s why we are able to help each other grow and shape our simple ideas into impressive initiatives! The home of Lev Kaupas is for ambitious, talented entrepreneurs, initiators, founders, believers, strivers… who have great ideas and can’t wait to start developing, creating, building upon their inspiration. Lev offers these passionate entrepreneurs a co-working space to breed their concepts into authentic products. Our members achieve this by simply working together and helping each other. It is here where Oliver and I give Nameshapers Open workshops and help out the other members with questions and queries they have with Social media, its usage and implementation. Also where I give my Focus Workshops around about once a month Show less

Giesbert is an absolutely fascinating individual with an incredible story. If you are curious you should read up some more about him and his activities here: http://www.laesieworks.com It was an honour to work and get to know Giesbert while I worked for him for 9 years. He is a C3 paraplegic patient who suffered a terrible accident in 1995 which severed his spinal cord from the neck below. For this he requires around the clock care. Amongst learning more about how intense it is to have gone through such an experience, I also learned how it is to take care of someone with this condition. What I learned most of all is how care on such a level is more about being real and human. After I learned all that I needed with respect to the medical tasks and what needed to be done, I remember just enjoying our conversations when I would walk in at 09:00 in the morning and our conversation coming to a conclusive end by around 15:00 once I was done. That one on one contact with the freedom to talk about anything honestly reminded me about the beauty of human connection. Giesbert taught me a lot about moral questions, persistence, resilience and how to live a life despite the many restrictions he felt and still feels. Show less

For 6 months I took over the job from Wim Haan who both being a coordinator of Diversity and the Program manager of all projects to do with diversity at the VU University. During this time I took over Wim's function in coordinating 4 student assistents, taking part in staff meetings and coordinating and facilitating projects falling under Diversity. It was an intense time due to the many events that took place and the student assistent teams I facilitated (an incredible team of individuals, all wonderfully divers and an honor to be apart of). My focus was on our team becoming stronger and the projects being run by means of the power of the student assistents and their teams. Show less

TEDxMaastrichts mission, up until 2012, was to help the world understand that change in healthcare is imminent. We aim to fire up and grow a movement of people who believe the next decennium should be the era of the rising of self-empowered patients. Embracing the patient, their family and informal care into the healthcare team. After being linked through by Jim Stolze because of working with TEDxAmsterdam, Lucien Engelen (initiator of TEDxMaastricht) took me on board and in the early phase I didn't have a very defined function: it was a little bit of everything : website updating, contact with particular organisations and student involvement. Slowly while the event was coming up, my focus started to go more on the recruiting of volunteers and contacting of people that would be joining us via the Live Stream. It was around that time that things started to pick up with Compassion for Care and i was giving all the activities around that much more attention which also became my focus Show less

After many years of working with AMEE as one of the initiating Student Task Force members in 2005, I then became an active staff member, supporting the staff and coordinating the social media that was then only just started in order to bridge the offline and online worlds.

Starting off the "Student Task Force", in 2005, I followed this through for 3 years to follow with the conference coordinating (with a team) where the international volunteers would be supporting the event, as well as organising our own side events along side the program that AMEE already had.

    • Training Support Division Director for the Team of Officials of IFMSA
      • Oct 2007 - Oct 2008

The Training Support Division Director of the IFMSA is responsible for all Training Activity within the organisation. Personally I was This entails coordinating initiatives in leadership and skills trainings and development of human resources, organising trainings sessions in conjunction toIFMSA activities, act as a resource for national member organisations (NMO’s) and be open to all IFMSA members. What I loved about this is almost too much to explain. The contact with all trainers all over the world, around about 600 in that time. And the energy and creativity to setup amazing projects together, such as the Leadership Summerschool, a successful project till today. I was able to travel to so many different places, organising and delivering TNT and TOT workshops. Trying to get all the trainers around the world to link with each other was my greatest challenge and to be there for questions and queries at all times. It was a year full of learning, excitement and so much fun. I was responsible for all training sessions taking place during General Assemblies as well as National Assemblies. I was also often responsible for the facilitation of larger sessions often including the TOM's. I enjoyed giving workshops and training sessions. Especially the following - Train the New Trainers: A 3-5 day workshop for members wishing to learn how to become a trainer - Train the Old Trainer: a 3-5 day workshop developing your skills further as a trainer - Gettings Things Done: Based on David Allen's book, a training on self/time management. I created this training together with Christophe Bader, the then president of BVMD Germany. - 7 Habits: Based on the book from Stephen Covey, a training on personal leadership. - Public Speaking/Presentation skills: A training on become a better/stronger speaker - Time Management: a mix of different elements to help individuals become more "focused" - Change Management: a training on how to create a change within an organisation Show less

With honour I was able to perform this position with the great David Spelt, who in so many ways has inspired me in my early active years as a student. What I enjoyed most about my position here was being so involved with the Dutch trainers of IFMSA and setting up projects and training events for all the members here. And by far working with David Spelt was just a blast! During our term we setup the TraiNL project proposal which entailed - All the training activities within IFMSA-NL. - Coordinating the training sessions during the national training weekend - Organising and delivering the train the trainer sessions, as well as the train the old trainer session. - Setting up the website for trainers and many databases registering who we can approach to give sessions - Created the basis for the Multidisciplinary National Training Day Show less

    • Medical Education Director for the EMSA European Board
      • Sep 2006 - Sep 2007

My task was to coordinate all tasks related to EMSA activities in the field of Medical Education. - promote activities in the field of medical education in medical faculties - establish and maintain contacts with other institutions pursuing similar objectives and activities - liaise with the EMS Council Board for any necessary preparations for the EMS Council Meeting, as appropriate. The projects that I was responsible for and the ones that I took part in were the following: - MEDINE - Bologna Process workshop - Contact with external organisations such as AEGEE - Organising and acting as interim chair of the EMS Council - Setting up the basis for the creation of the Leadership Summerschool - Responsible for the communication towards the faculties on medical education topics - Preparing and delivering the medical education sessions during EMSA meetings (National Coordinators and Enthusiasts meeting as well as the General Assembly) What I loved about working within EMSA is the fact that your working with a relatively small board and the influence you can have is much larger then one expects. The contact with small teams and the fact that I worked with beautiful individuals. Show less

This has to be the moment that I learned the most about student activity and what it meant to run my an organisation. Recruiting, holding and chairing weekly meetings, motivating the entire committee, activities, promotion, events, projects, many teams, representation on a local, national and international level. It seemed that this position seemed to entail it all! My gratitude for all the people that I worked with during this time and for all that I learned. Its was an incredible journey and I learned a lot about how building teams is also about building friendships. And if one wishes to make something happen, you need to (a) believe and (b) work your ass off. And with a team like the one I had, that certainly was the case. Thank you again! Show less

For 1 year I was a sales representative for the electronic stores at customs of the See Buy Fly chains at Schiphol. I joined this job initially because of my interest in technology and always wanting to play with the newest gadgets. So it seemed like a win-win to me. It was a nice experience for the year that I work here, the colleagues were great and I was able to learn a lot about electronics, their background and why certain products have better quality than others. I think I most enjoyed interacting with people that were about to travel, there is something special about the atmosphere at customs which is hard to explain however magical in some way. Show less
