Thomas van Gaal

I’ve worked with Mark for four years at the Netherlands Youth Institute. As a colleague he is very pleasant to work with: he is a very social and intelligent person with a good sense of humor. To me his main qualities are his good communication and writing skills and his ability to bridge the gab between knowledge and practice. In his work for Eurodesk, a project aimed at informing young people and youth workers about the possibilities Europe has to offer, he contributed to a fully digitalized and socialized information service and multiple partnership projects.

The Netherlands Youth Institute is the Dutch national knowledge institute on children and youth matters. I worked for the Youth in Action programme, an EU programme for non-formal learning activities for young people. The programme stimulated the active involvement of young people in society and provided opportunities to acquire intercultural competences. I was responsible for a few action lines, such as international youth democracy projects. I assessed grant applications, monitored granted projects and promoted the opportunities of international youth work to various target groups of the programme. Besides, I was responsible for the external communication. Finally, I was involved in activities focused on cultural diversity and intercultural learning for young people and youth workers. As project manager of the EU information network Eurodesk I was responsible for informing young people and the youth sector on mobility opportunities for young people in Europe, funding opportunities and youth policy in Europe. As an editor for Kennisnet Jeugd, I contacted authors for writing blogs, supported them in this, and edited the texts. Show less
