Paul Chen
I have the pleasure of working along side James in a student short film for 6 months. He is a very talented artist with a great eye for aesthetics, composition, cinematography, animation and is exceptionally good with colors and character designs.Without his expertise in character design, digital painting and storytelling to set the direction of the short film, it wouldn't have been what it is. He is very patient, understanding and generous in sharing his knowledge and expertise with the rest of his team and is always quick to apologise when he makes a mistake, thus making him someone very enjoyable to work with due to his humility and graciousness in admitting his flaws openly and be prepared to correct them in order to work with others towards a common goal without letting ego get in the way. He is also always open to ideas apart from his own and recognises the effort of his teammates while making sure the direction of the short film he leads the team in allows for everyone to express themselves creatively and be able to learn and grow in the process. He explains his ideas clearly and patiently so everyone can follow his train of thoughts and execute out the vision and style he set. He is also a very dedicated person and a positive influence during demoralising moments in the production, always encouraging the others to look on the bright side, and taking on extra responsibilities and even put in his own money to fund the music scoring needed for the short film in recognition of the effort that everyone has put into it. I had the opportunity to work closely with the game designer Enrique Dueñas in the developing of the card game "London after Midnight". I was hired as an illustrator to create high quality images that would become a very representative attribute of the game. I also ended up art directing the graphic design team to make sure that they would follow the aesthetics that we had chosen for the game.
