    • "Virtual" Lawyer
      • Nov 2010 - Jun 2013

After I moved from Australia back to Canada, I had the opportunity to continue working for NLS Law Pty Ltd. I was the legal director's "virtual" lawyer. This meant that via a remote server and Skype I was able to help establish the Victims Compensation Practice. I was responsible for more than 70 victims compensation matters, which involved preparing and submitting applications online, drafting and finalising submissions and chronologies and providing regular updates to clients regarding their claim. I also continued to draft chronologies and opinions regarding possible claims under victims compensation, motor accidents and family provision legislation as well as identify possible negligence claims against the State of NSW arising from abuse in care. At the legal director's request, I also drafted legal documents including affidavits, parenting orders, court applications and subpoenas, as well as provided research. This arrangement worked well because we used online communication tools, such as Skype and email to communicate with each other, and was able to manage client files via a remote server. Show less

    • Lawyer
      • May 2010 - Nov 2010

I represented clients in Children's, Family and Civil Law matters on a pro bono, legal aid or private basis in either the Children’s Court, the Family Court, the Federal Magistrates Court, the Local Court, or the District Court. I also attended mediation/dispute resolution sessions. Other duties included: interviewing clients, rendering advice, performing legal research, drafting legal documents (such as affidavits, subpoenas, submissions, and chronologies), as well as preparing legal briefs for barristers and aiding clients with their applications for Legal Aid. I have also drafted document precedents, which are still used today by other lawyers at NLS Law. I was also given the opportunity to draft chronologies and opinions on possible claims in victims compensation, motor accidents, family provision legislation and negligence (claims against the State of NSW arising from abuse in care). This of course, involved interpreting laws, rules and regulations, as well as analysing the probable outcomes of possible cases. In addition, I supervised students completing their Practical Legal Training as requested by the legal director. Show less

    • Lawyer
      • Oct 2009 - Apr 2010

I represented Aboriginal clients in criminal law matters, which developed my understanding of the legal and cross-cultural issues faced by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. It has also helped extend and enhance my knowledge of criminal law and procedure. I regularly attended the Local Court, the Children’s Court and the District Court for mentions, pleas, applications under the Mental Health Act, and bail applications. I also helped senior solicitors in defended hearings. I have also attended the Local Court on busy list days, which increased my ability to work confidently under pressure, while maintaining attention to each client’s particular circumstances. Other duties included: interviewing clients, rendering advice, performing legal research, drafting and filling legal documents including affidavits, subpoenas, submissions, and final chronologies, as well as preparing legal briefs for barristers.I took on the role of instructing solicitor in District Court trials and sentencing matters. In addition, I effectively liaised with clients, staff members, and professional parties such as colleagues, the department of Public Prosecutors and the police, drug & alcohol rehabilitation centers, government departments and associated bodies to ensure the timely progression of a client’s matter. • Articling Student/Legal Support Officer
      • Mar 2009 - Oct 2009

I was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to complete my practical legal training with the ALS. I participated in client interviews at the office, correctional centers and via Audio Visual Link; reviewed and maintained files in preparation for court cases; prepared briefs to barristers and experts; conducted research by using diverse sources to assist solicitors with submissions, representations and advice; drafted correspondence, prepared subpoenas and appeal applications. I also implemented new office procedures and helped write the office procedure manual. I also assisted solicitors in court on busy list days and in hearing matters as well as took on the role of instructing legal clerk in District Court jury trials and sentencing matters.Part of this opportunity was the chance to represent clients before I became a lawyer. Magistrate Truscott at the Local Court in Newcastle grated my request for leave to appear on behalf of clients in October 2009. I was able to represent clients in mentions, pleas and sentencing matters. Show less
