As a newscaster, it is my responsibility to have a five minute newscast ready for every top of the hour. Our casts cover at least six news stories, one minute worth of sports news and finish with 30 seconds of weather. Depending on shift times, newscasting can begin as early as 6am. The responsibility of a newscaster is to present the news effectively, there should not be any mistakes in pronunciation or facts being shared. It is also crucial that all the news is relative to the day of the newscast. In the first semester, the majority of my newsroom duties were focused around newscasting for CFRL.As a reporter, it is my responsibility to come in for an 8-8:30am meeting to discuss the news for today with second year students. Once everyone has told the group their stories that they will be covering, it is important to get out as fast as you can to bring the news back for the earliest newscast possible. Being a reporter tests resourcefulness when sources are unavailable. The stories I have covered for London, Ontario include:-The Costco Crash hearing that set the trial for June 2015-The Applicant increase statistics at Brescia, one of Western University's affiliate University Colleges-The Cultural Festival that took place at Brescia-The Barn Fire at Storybook GardensAs a Desk Editor, it is my responsibility to work with the other students at the news desk (a circular workspace in the centre of the news studio) to keep up-to-date on any breaking news stories, take calls from citizens who have leads on stories and help the second year students on 106.9 XFM. The second year students may ask for a weather segment or sports segment to be done by a first year desk editor and in special cases, a first year can create a full newscast for 106.9 XFM. In special cases, a first year may be able to move from Desk Editor to Reporter and cover any breaking news that the other reporters are unable to get to because of the stories they are already working on.
