Tomas Bisono, MBA
When I trained under Paul, in 2014, I learned quite a few trade secrets only a coach with his credentials and expertise would know. Using the inspiration from that acquired knowledge I started to implement some of the concepts I retained from all our interactions and set off to start my own coaching consultancy. Soon thereafter I started coaching about a dozen athletes, from nationalities such as Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru, United States, Spain, and of course, the Dominican Republic.. It became evident that what Paul had transmitted to me through our constant dialogue planted a seed I could rely on to propel my new athletes forward. Very quickly they started to experience exponential improvement in their swimming, both in technique and in performance. I continued to consult with Paul on several aspects of training, such as strength training and nutrition, which contributed to the growth of my client base. After a short four months the results obtained by my athletes were expectacular. In a span of twelve months I had helped my athletes improved in 70% of the swims they participated in. In addition, those swimmers amassed over 12 medals at the 2016 Southamerican Masters Swimming Championships. One athlete made it into the FINA masters top 10 for 2016. I have continued to use his insight and advice to learn new concepts that will guarantee great results, along with the gowth of my business. I couldn't thank Paul enough for his instrumental role in helping me get to where I am today. Without his expert advice this would probably never have happened.

I first communicated with Paul in October 2016 and after a number of discussions I had clarity and confidence about the elite level at which Paul operates in everything he does. His holistic qualifications, overall knowledge, experience and skills in elite high performance sport are at the highest levels I have personally witnessed during my extensive swimming career. The majority of my training was in my native country Slovakia and I am a long term member of our National Team. I have competed primarily in Western and Central Europe over a long period. I have had regular contact with many top international athletes and coaches during this period but have never come across a coach with such extensive holistic knowledge, attributes and skills that Paul has. His ability to communicate any technical aspect is done with such ease that you always know what is required, how it is to be done and essentially the reasons why. Empowerment of the athlete is an important tool that I have noticed that Paul uses extremely well. As English is my second language Paul's communication skills were an extremely important factor in our coach/athlete relationship. For me understanding the processes that Paul utilises to tailor all aspects of training to the individual at elite levels was invaluable.Through these processes Paul can create the best environment for athletes to consistently perform at peak optimal performance. I feel very fortunate to have been coached by Paul in the lead up to the World Masters being held in Budapest, Hungary in 2017. Although I didn't make the challenging "A" qualifying time of 27.51 for 50m Br this was not a reflection of the technical changes Paul had made in all areas or my training preparation but a psychological issue that has held me back previously at major finals on the world stage. During the process I won the Queensland State Open Sprint 50m LC Championship and recently made the final at the Australian National Championships. Paul had an extensive debrief with me a week after the National final swim and has a simple action plan in place to assist me to overcome my inner demons that have held me back previously. Training to date with Paul has been a fantastic journey where I have learn't so much and been trained very differently than I have with any previous coach. One of Paul's philosophies that I really believe in and have seen the benefits from is training in all aspects smarter than others, not harder than others. I feel very fortunate to have had this opportunity and couldn't have asked for a more qualified and technically focused coach to work with as I steadily progress towards my number one goal of swimming at an Olympics. With Paul's assistance I feel far more confident that my dream can become a reality.

International Swimmer - Masai Zebe-Chaka - Jamaican National Team
-
Feb 2017 - Jun 2017
Created all training sets for pool, gym & dry-land, video analysis & feedback. Mas qualified for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, holds numerous Jamaican Junior Records & the National 50m Fly Record until 2017. Mas trained with English Head Coach Dr John Rudd along with his friend Ben Proud who was 4th in 50m Fs at the Rio Olympics. John's program was based out of England's #1 Ranked Club Plymouth Leander. Mas was the current UK & European Masters Champion in 50m Fly with a FINA World Ranking of 3 for the period I provided consulting services to him. The initial period was conducted remotely and then followed by a 4-month training block in Brisbane in 2017. We developed numerous aspects over this period, but the primary methodology was very process focussed on key aspects. This included both enhancing his areas of strength while developing other aspects to ensure I utilised our time to maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Periodising training on a holistic process focussed basis across all components i.e., in water, gym resistance, a variety of dryland training, core development (in water/land), starts (modified dive/flight/angle of attack for entry), skills, sports psychology, mind-set for training and racing, breathing techniques, priming level etc, created an environment to produce maximal optimal performance. I had identified a major focus was enhancing Rate of Force Development (RFD) from the blocks and continued into the underwater kick phase. To achieve this I developed a bespoke program for Mas with a number of specific inputs. In pre-testing with Mas wearing trunks his underwater phase kick count to breakout was his standard 10-11 kicks with a time on repeats being in the range 5.1-5.3 sec. In the final weeks we retested with Mas wearing drag pants, again doing repeats. The gains were stunning with the underwater phase kick count reduced to 7 kicks on every repeat with a time range of 5.0-5.3 sec. Show less

International Swimmer - Matej Kuchar - Slovakian National Team
-
Sep 2016 - Jun 2017
Working on every aspect of training from periodisation of training sets linking pool, gym & nutrition, sports supps & psychology. Training focus was a QT in 50m Br at the World Champs in Budapest. Matt has represented Slovakia National Team previously at FINA World Champs & European Champs most recently in London with a time of 28.66 in May 2016. In February 2016 Matt competed at the QLD Champs in the Open Men's 50m Top qualifier in heats & won the Final in 28.56. I coached Matt from September 2016 towards the 2017 QLD Sprints which were closely followed by the Australian Nationals. In Nov & Dec 2016 our preparation was interrupted by no pool training due to mercury toxicity. Matt swum for Slovakia winning Gold in 28.50 at the 2017 Queensland State Sprints. We were still expecting a 28 low but he was underdone in preparation due to mercury issue. This showed with 3 swims in an afternoon with only a short break between the semis and final. Positive was all 3 swims had consistent times of 28.5. In March 2017 Matt made it through to the Australian National's 50 Br Final as a Visitor (representing Slovakia). Very few Visitors ever make Australian National Open Finals. He didn’t swim to his full potential due to an ongoing battle with performance anxiety from various pressures. The final was the last event at 10.30 p.m which didn't assist. Matt could have won the National Title & qualified for the World Champs. In final testing over 3 day's at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre Matt was swimming fast with great efficiency. If Matt reproduced the times from testing he would have swum under the very fast “A” QT of 27.51 by anywhere between .10 to .50. Photo's include Matt at QLD State Sprints, Gold Coast Aquatic Centre & Modeling. One is Matt on Gold Coast doing a Br drill (You Tube) Show less

International Swimmer - Tomas Bisono - Dominican Republic National Team

Mar 2014 - Feb 2017
I provided consulting for Tomas in 2014 for the FINA World Masters LC Champs in Montreal, Quebec in Aug 2014. I provided holistic training across numerous inputs virtually as Tomas was based in the Dominican Republic. I also mentored Tomas in his Head Coach roles at Clinique de Nations Swimming & Santo Domingo Private Country Club. Tomas attended Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida, USA on a swimming scholarship. They compete in the Southwest Region, Conference USA NCAA Div 1. Tomas was Team Captain in his last 2 years & remained unbeaten during his undergrad years in 50,100 & 200m Bk. Tomas was racing in the 40-44 AG at the 2014 Fina World Masters. His times & FINA WR Pre-Event were: 50m Bk 29.56s WR 41 100m Bk 1.04.95 WR 8 100m Fs 1.00.01 WR 42 Pre meet testing near completion of tapering we were well in advance of all times & in a strong position. to win Gold in 50m Bk. A serious health issue occurred with his 3-year-old daughter having seizures just days before leaving for Canada ruling him out of attending with the DR National Team. Training with me ceased but we have maintained contact. His performance under my coaching created sponsorship from Gatorade & 2 sports nutrition suppliers in DR. Times at the 2014 Fina WMC 50m Bk AG 40-44 were 1st 28.19 sec & 5th 28.80s. We were sub 28sec prior to final testing. In 2018 Tomas swam 28.30s for 50m Bk in AG 45-49 with no input from me since 2014, I have assisted Tomas in an advisory capacity as he developed his private coaching business with DR swimmers & others from across The Americas. Most achieve ongoing performance enhancements & success at a wide variety of swimming events internationally. Tomas had 15 clients competing for various Countries at the 2017 Fina WMC in Budapest. Tomas is competing in 50Bk at the FINA sanctioned 2023 US Nationals - Masters in Florida in 2023. I commenced consulting in Sept 2022. The goal is breaking his AG WR of 28.58. Our conservative goal time is 27.91. Show less

International MMA Fighter - Darshan Palav - Indian National Team
-
May 2014 - Dec 2016
I have been consulting to Darshan in a variety of areas since he approached me in May 2014. Darshan not only competes including being selected for Team India's recent trip in April 2016 to Bahrain to compete against Team Bahrain, but he is also a Grappling & MMA Coach at Zen Kickboxing Academy in Thane, Mumbai. Darshan has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Mumbai but also holds a Bachelor of Exercise Science & Exercise Physiology from Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College Hospital & Research Center. Currently I'm working & mentoring Darshan in relation to the field of Sports Psychology with a specific focus on High Performance Athletes. Darshan's brief was simply to learn & gain an understanding of anything that can create or leads to a Winning Mentality. The specific areas I'm focusing on are coupling the science of winning with high performance sports psychology. This utilised cutting edge techniques that can deliver maximal mental performance from individual athletes or team's. In professional sport at elite levels, the key factor for achieving consistent optimal performance is by focusing an appropriate period of training on mental & psychological aspects. On numerous occasions what distinguishes the best from the rest is mental based & not anatomical, physiological or skill based. Psychological aspects have to be in a harmonious balance with their physical talents. As a high performance coach you are seeking the development of these two areas so the gap between an awesome performance & a poor performance is only a very small margin. There is a science & methodology covering numerous areas that an elite athlete can be equipped with to align equally with their physical performance. Show less

Mentoring - John Wallace Australian National Swimming Team Coach
-
Dec 2015 - Dec 2015
I spent time with John Wallace at PWC "Pelican Waters Caloundra" at Caloundra on Queensland's Sunshine Coast during the final preparation stages for the 2015 QLD LC Championships at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre. I attended all Senior Squad Pool & Dry-Land sessions. I had a proactive communication & feedback role with all squad swimmers during pool training. This included times, splits, stroke rate & stroke count. Additionally, I worked with a number of the squad in fine-tuning turns, race starts & relay change over. One of the swimmers I worked with a good deal was Kaylee McKeown who made the Australian National Team the following year alongside her older sister Taylah. At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, she won 3 Gold Medals, one in setting a new World Record in 100m Bk LC. The other events were 200m Bk & 4 x 100m Medley. At the 2017 World Championships Keeley was part of the Silver Medal team in the 400m Mixed Medley Relay. At the 2019 World Championships, she won a Silver Medal in the 200m Bk & in the 400 Medely Relay. Show less

Senior Squad Coach. Mentoring Assistant Coach. Overseeing all Squad Levels. Periodistion Plan. Monthly Committee report. Creating & Facilitating Dry land & Gym Strength and Conditioning Sessions. Attend Club Targeted Meets as Head Coach. Achieved excellent results with Senior Squad swimmers at meets with ongoing PB's, Winning or Medalling in Finals and Age Champions. Club Result highest ever finish at Capricornia Coast District Swimming Championships of 2nd Place. VERY ENJOYABLE TIME AT CLUB WITH SWIMMERS & PARENTS. LOVED THE LIFESTYLE IN TROPICAL SAVANNA CLIMATE WITH DOMINANT DRY SEASON. I WAS ADVISED BY THE PRESIDENT PRIOR TO FLYING UP FROM NSW TO MEET THE SWIMMERS & PARENTS, TAKE SWIMMERS THROUGH A TRAINING SESSION THEN MEET THE COMMITTE THAT THE PREVIOUS LONG TERM HEAD COACH HAD TAKEN THE SENIOR SQUAD (Age Range 13-18) AS FAR AS HER SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE ALLOWED. I ACCEPTED THE ROLE AWARE THAT SHE WAS STAYING ON TO FOCUS ON JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT & WOULD BE VERY SUPPORTIVE. CHALLENGES BEGAN WITHIN DAYS DUE TO JEALOUSY WHICH I CAN EXPAND ON. THIS CREATED TENSION, COMMUNICATION ISSUES & LEAD TO HER UNDERMINING ME WITH SOME COMMITTEE MEMBERS BEHIND MY BACK AS SHE HAD LONG TERM CONNECTION & FRIENDSHIPS. THIS CREATED FRICTION & ISSUES WITH THE COMMITTEE THAT WEREN'T BALANCED & MINIMISED THE LEVEL OF COACH THEY WERE FORTUNATE TO HAVE IN ME. ADDITIONAL UNDERMINING AT MY 1ST SWIM MEET (1st 2 weeks in role). ESCALATED TO POINT, IN MY VIEW, WITH PRESIDENT & COMMITTEE THAT CLEARLY WOULD REMAIN. HER ACTIONS WITHIN DAYS WERE CHILDISH FOR AN OLDER ADULT. I WASN'T PREPARED TO CONTINUE IN THAT ENVIRONMENT & DIDN'T NEED TO SO I RESIGNED FROM THE ROLE AFTER 5 MONTHS & RETURNED TO MY GOLD COAST BASE. I LEARNED A VALUABLE LESSON NEVER TO PLACE MYSELF IN THOSE SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCES AGAIN. Show less

Elite Athlete - Diane Haupt USA Short/Long Course Triathlon, Marathon, World Championships Ironman
-
May 2014 - Jan 2015
Diane initially contacted me for assistance with her nutritional profile. Diane was seeking assistance with nutrition to aid day to day training loads. I agreed but also wanted to create specific macro & micro nutrient plans to enhance her performance. Diane competed in a number of sports that have similarities but very few elite athletes would have the gift to allow them to compete across the range she did. Different training was required to produce explosive power & speed, efficient & effective aerobic & anaerobic energy systems & effective elimination of Lactate for Short Course Triathlon, For training & nutrition for Marathon running over 3 hrs & Ironman events of up to 7 - 10 hrs the training & nutritional requirements for the body physiologically could be no further apart. What commenced as Consulting in Nutrition expanded into Training Planning & Training Workouts. Diane competed in Masters Short Course Triathlon, Masters Long Course Triathlon, Marathons including the New York Maraton & the Boston Marathon twice. Diane also competed in Ironmans including qualifying in one Ironman for an opportunity to compete in the Ironman World Championships held each year since 1981 at Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. The bike & run follow the coast beside Barren Black Lava Fields. Temperatures of 35 degrees Celcius & the local ho'omumuks winds create crosswinds of up to 72 km/ph. The three phases of the Ironman have time cut-offs for men & women for each phase. If you don't make them you're out of the race. Each year the Ironman World Championship commences with a 3.9 lm Ocean Swim, followed by a 180 km Bike Ride & lastly a full Marathon of 42 km. Having the ability to compete at an Elite Level in the wide range of events that Diane does is very rare. Few athletes can assimilate such distinct physiological differences & requiring such a large variation of training aspects is very rare. Diane successfully completed the World Ironman Champioship. Multi Sports, Multi Event & Surf Life Saving Athlete - Beth Menhinnitt
-
2008 - Dec 2009
I commenced coaching Beth in the Adult Squad at Somerset Swimming Academy during 2008 & through to December 2009 when she was moved from the Gold Coast. Beth was a very fit, very focussed & a very talented athlete. Beth worked in Brisbane, QLD for QLD Police as their fitness trainer primarily for frontline officers. Beth was very involved in surf lifesaving & was skilled with the varied equipment they use for training, rescues & competition. In 2009 Beth told me she wanted to competing in the Coolangatta Gold multi-discipline held every year.. It's a big event on the Gold Coast run by Multisports Australia. Its a serious challenge & you need to be very committed. It was in mid-October & Beth asked if I could assist her with performance nutrition & supplementation. We had a scheduled weekly chat about the race, how training was going etc. This was when I gave her details of specific changes to the Macronutrient Plan. I also gave her advice on which sports supplement to introduce based on how far out from the race date. So we worked really well as a team as I knew her commitment level. Assistant Coach at "Swim Like The Stars" Camp for Australian Age Group Swimmers
-
Feb 2009 - Feb 2009
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to be an Assistant Coach to the Australian National Swim Team Head Coach Alan Thompson, the Australian National Youth Team Head Coach Leigh Nugent, Australian National Team Coaches Denis Cotterell, Head Coach at Pro-Ma Miami Swimming Club on the Gold Coast, QLD & Andrew Baker, Head Coach at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre in QLD. The camp was the inaugural Five day live in Swim Camp for elite age group swimmers from around Australia. The venue was at The Southport School (TSS) on the Gold Coast, Queensland. All of the Coaches, Assistant Coaches & Swimmers stayed in various boarding houses & had all meals for the day together in the large dining hall prepared by chefs. We had 2 x 2 hour swim clinic/sessions each day honing in on a larger technical area as well as smaller high performance biomechanics. They were presented by the Australian National Coaches. The Assistant Coaches all had a lane with the role of monitoring your swimmers & providing feedback as to how well they were implementing the functional aspect currently being worked on. Over the 5 days we had talks in the auditorium after dinner, the Australian Team physios take the swimmers through exercises that would benefit their development. On the last day, we had a few swimmers from the National Swim Team drop in as well as team racing in a mini Olympics. The National Team swimmers were Melanie Schlanger - Freestyle Swimmer + 4 x 100 Relay, Jessicah Schipper - Butterfly Swimmer + 4 x 100 Relay & Christian Springer - Breaststroke Swimmer + 4 x 100 Relay. Melanie & Christian are both in the group photo. Melanie is on the far left side at the front row. She has jean shorts & an Australian Swim team top. Christian is in the back row 7th in from far right. Easy to see him as he is very tall. Show less

Mentoring - Denis Cotterell - Long Term Australian National Team Coach & Mentor

2009 - 2009
I met Dennis in 2008. He was training his Senior Squad at Somerset Swimming Academy where I was Assistant Head Coach. In January 2009 he was a coach from the Australian National Team set-up presenting the "Swim Like The Stars" program. A five day live-in program based on the Gold Coast for teenage swimmers from around Australia. I was an Assistant Coach to assist in the delivery of the program. I spoke with Denis to see if I could spend a little time with him on the pool deck & that was totally fine.. What I liked about Denis & why I wanted to spend some time with him was one of the world's top coaches & was so grounded & humble. He was well known as the Coach of Grant Hackett who won back to back 1500m Gold Medals in 2000 at Sydney & 2004 in Athens. He coached numerous Olympic, World Championships & Commonwealth Games Medalists in the four disciplines. Giaan Rooney, Daniel Kowalski. Trevor Hendy, Emma Snowsill, Karla Gilbert, Courtney Hancock, Ky Hurst, Shannon Eckstein, Karla Gilbert & others. When I first started on the pool deck with Denis it coincided with the 1st Chinese Swimmer's arrival to train with Denis. I didn't know him but he was a very tall teenager. He had three Chinese men with him. I found out later he was Sun Yang, China's big hope for dominating men's swimming. With Denis's specialist coaching, this did play out. Sun Yang became the first male swimmer in history to win Olympic & World Championship Gold at every Freestyle distance from 200m to 1500m. By 2012 Denis was coaching Australian & Chinese swimmers in his elite squad at Miami but in May 2017 he walked away from coaching but continued to coach his Chinese Swimmers outside of normal a.m. & p.m. squad hours. I looked at the training sets, listened to Denis & watched swimmer technique. Short chat with Denis after training. He was always open to talking anything swimming related as he had coached for multiple decades. At times we would have longer chats in his office. Show less
