When I think of the word empathy, I think of Helen. I first met Helen when she took over as Executive Director of Leadership Southern Maryland and have had the opportunity to engage with her on a number of LSM and other initiatives. Helen’s ability to empathize and respond to people’s needs comes across in the programs she develops for LSM and the time she takes to respond on an individual level. Her ability to understand others is active; she listens, seeks to understand, and takes action. If there is something that Helen can do to move things along, it’s probably already done. Helen is highly regarded by her staff and the people she generously serves and is certainly someone you want working by your side.

Led a nonprofit experiential educational program to develop leaders from the Southern Maryland area for regional collaboration. Leadership Southern Maryland nurtures trusteeship among community leaders, increases understanding and awareness of regional opportunities and threats while participants develop and strengthen their network of decision makers to encourage cooperation and make informed choices. Directly responsible for leading an organization of volunteers to ensure candidates are educated through a series of classes and hands-on experiences that highlight local and regional issues while absorbing the local “flavor” in each of Maryland's most southern three counties - Charles, St. Mary's, and Calvert. Ensure participants broaden their perspectives on a number of the most significant issues challenging our region. Ensure each class reflects a cross-section of the region to include diversity of geographic location, profession, ethnicity, age and gender. Select participants who are mid- to upper-tier leaders who have demonstrated aptitude and ability to become senior-level leaders, as well as senior-level leaders new to the area and who exemplify a sincere concern and commitment to help shape the future of Southern Maryland.
