I first met Etienne in January 2005 when he participated in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. IAP design seminar. The goal of the class is to work in a group to create and build an installation, which honors the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The completed installation is placed in a prominent location on the MIT campus is considered an important part of MIT’s annual celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Etienne was only a sophomore then but he ended up being one of the student leaders for a very successful project working with elementary school children in the Cambridge Public Schools and his performance was excellent. In February 2005, Etienne was accepted into the MIT Washington Summer Internship Program, which I coordinate. Each year we choose fifteen undergraduate students, from a field of seventy to eighty excellent candidates, to participate in the program. The undergraduates, who specialize in science and technology, work in paid public policy internships during the summer in Washington, DC. We supplement their work experience with a class and a spring break trip to DC. Etienne worked with then Chief Counsel, James Turner, on the United States House of Representatives Science Committee.
