I worked with Tori to build an open-source MERN stack application. Tori was instrumental in leading the team with her planning, documentation, and frontend skills. With the API design she has written for the app, it served as a good design blueprint for me to effortlessly build the backend. For knowledge sharing, Tori has helped the team gained a better understanding of component-based development and integrating authentication. As for collaborating with Tori, it is without difficulty as she always provides meaningful pull requests and detailed code reviews that led to better team productivity. Tori is a fast learner as it only took her a few days when she tackled to build the authentication feature. Not only that, but the energy and the personality she brings to the team also makes the meetings lively. Within a month’s time, I have seen what Tori is capable of and how she would grow further in her career. I have gotten to know her passion for software development and love for Dungeons & Dragons. She is without a doubt a great team member to work with.

As a fellow at Year On, my hours were spent working alongside mentors and coaches to develop goals that focused on universal skills. Weekly goals were spread anywhere from familiarizing myself with new coding languages to new spoken languages; creating mockups and wireframes to painting with watercolors; attending networking events to participating in hackathon-style work sprints. Beyond my growth as a designer and developer during my gap year - the program also focused heavily on building our portfolio of soft skills. Workshops tackled dozens of topics like effective communication, working in teams, critical thinking, handling rejection, mustering confidence, and building a network. Communication workshops touched on how to have difficult conversations, effective email writing, and public speaking. Show less
