As a Support Assistant at the ELC, my role involved multiple different elements. I worked alongside my team to provide the international students support with issues/queries regarding everything from accommodation to bank accounts, whilst also doing general admin work, managing social media and providing assistance to tutors. In addition, I planned and taught various ‘Conversation Clubs’ and ‘Film Clubs’ with the aim of helping students improve their language skills and took students on trips to cultural places within Liverpool.

Although this job is not related to my chosen career path, it has taught me many things. Firstly it taught me about the world of work itself, due to me being only 16 when I was hired, along with how to handle customer relations (both over the phone and face-to-face) and how to assess situations and think on my feet. • Portuguese Language Assistant (Key Stage 1 & 2)
      • May 2014 - Jul 2014

Mid-May 2014, Aintree Davenhill Primary School acquired two new students whose family had recently emigrated to the UK from Portugal. These two children (a 10 year old girl and a 6 year old boy) were only fluent in their native language. As I was already a linguistic volunteer at the school, they approached me with the knowledge that I studied Portuguese at University for a year. Although I made them aware that I only had an intermediate level of the Portuguese language, I was accepted for the post and during the space of two months I saw a vast improvement in not only my level of Portuguese, but most importantly the level of the children. I enjoyed this post as it allowed me to fully immerse myself into the Portuguese language for a duration of time. I was allowed to structure my own lessons, took one-to-one mentor sessions with the students, translated and interpreted documents and lessons, and also helped to integrate them into their class. I enjoyed the challenges I faced in this working environment and was overwhelmed with the result.

    • Personal Tutor in Spanish Language (Key Stage 3)
      • Sep 2012 - Jul 2013

A friend of mine had a family member who had recently started in a new private school mid-term (age 11/12). The curriculum in her new school included Spanish and she had previously only studied French. Through recommendation, her parents hired me to tutor her once a week and improve her level of language, so that it was equal to the rest of her class. This was my first experience teaching a higher level of Spanish as I had only ever previously taught primary school children. My student quickly caught up with the rest of her class, but we continued with our tutoring sessions as I centered my learning around topics she enjoyed such as social media, likes and dislikes, hobbies, useful tourist Spanish etc.

    • Spanish Language Teacher to Younger Children (Pre-National Curriculum Education)
      • Sep 2010 - Jul 2011

For a short period of time I taught Spanish to the children of Shirley Hudson Child-minding Service. This involved planning a range of lessons that focused on learning through play as the children ranged from the ages of 2 to 4.
