      • Was responsible for identifying how to digitize the content of Simon & Schuster’s backlist in a manner that was future-proof, for a key corporate initiative. Convinced the company of the need for XML, PDF and workflow standards. Chose a variation of PDF that would allow for print on demand as well as online search and display; developed S&S XML based on the Docbook 5 standard, to fit specific S&S needs; wrote an RFP and conducted the search for an offshore partner to do the scanning and data conversion of approximately 15,000 books in 18 months. • As part of the digitization initiative, was also responsible for designing a means to search and retrieve book contracts in text and as scans. Used developers at Tata in the U.S. and India to build the system in Mark Logic, with a .NET front end. • Introduced the concept of digital asset management; designed and implemented four generations of DAMS. In 1995, created a database of cover images to be used by Sales. This grew into an archive to preserve all digital content in 1999. In 2001 directed the construction of an enterprise DAM based on Artesia TEAMS. In 2005 replaced TEAMS with a .NET-based system, Chuckwalla, which allowed us to integrate with the rest of the technological infrastructure and turn the system into a content nexus. Content is collected in the DAMS and fed to online partners along with ONIX data. XML files of book interiors are pulled from the DAMS to furnish chapter excerpts and metadata for search purposes. Its tight integration with other SQL-based systems allowed the creation of the real-time Digital Catalog. • Developed the standards and workflow for producing ebooks in 1999, based on work with the IDPF in creating the first ebook standard, OEBPS. Continues to work with Editorial, Design and Production to push the envelope in ebook publishing. Show less
